Where are all the poets at?

Discussion in 'The Craft of Writing Poetry' started by Lewdog, Feb 25, 2014.

The last poetry contest was pretty...pedestrian. So where are all the poets at? Is there enough interest to get the poetry contest back going? Is there a reason why people didn't enter the contest before? I really wish it would start up again.

I suppose I'd give it a shot, though I'm not very good.

Well there is normally a poetry contest, but there was barely enough entries last time, and not enough people voted.

I'm new here, too, and am only beginning to be aware of the contests and all. I write poetry, both sacred and secular, but not a whole lot of either lately (too much demand from my novels). My best secular stuff (IMHO) dates from the mid-90s but if a contest on this forum requires new, unpublished work, I imagine I could still come up with something halfway decent. ;)

I take it we click the Contests tab and find out there what's going on?

Just checked the tab. Has there been a contest since the 13th of November last year?

I suppose I could give it a shot. Trouble with me is by the time I come up with an idea for a contest, then write it - the contest is over. lol

Also I get worried because poems usually don't rhyme, nor do they follow any poem patterns. Usually their just bits of prose.

All poems don't have to rhyme, it's just a style. Maybe that is part of the problem with the poetry contest. It isn't necessarily a prompt, but it was being used as a teaching tool to get people to try new styles and types of poems. That might scare some. I would recommend basic prompts like, "a sandy beach," or "the get away." Just keep it simple and make it fun.

How much lead time does one get between the announcement of the prompt and the deadline?

I think it was bi-weekly, but you get the prompt the first of the second week. So you get a week each time to write a poem. That may be wrong because I'm not used to bi-weekly contests.

Well it seems more and more people are getting interested. Who runs this thing? Let's get it started back up!

    Ok, so...

The person who runs the contest hasn't been around in a while, but as a mod I have all the vested powers one needs in order to make the technical parts of such a thing happen.

Give me a few minutes to peruse where the situation was left off at the last of the poetry contests and I will be back. Promise. ;)

One thing I can already tell folks from my years with the forum is that this (and any other contest) depends on some advertising. Yes, advertising. You've gotta' sell it!

Ok, so it seems contest #243 was the last one. I'm going to leave this thread here in General Writing for sake of exposure. I know it should go down in the Poetry Contest area - yes, fussier members, I'm speaking to you - but we'll leave it here for now to get some foot traffic.

Ideas on a theme, topic, etc?

I'm trying to write a poem showing fear and terror. I think that is an interesting turn for a poetry contest

How about 'New Beginnings', or something along that line? :)

    They are averse to competition.

Though I am not a poet, I would love to partake!

Edit: To be a poet, is it as simple as writing poems or does is there a prerequisite?

    I'm a poet!

    I'd enjoy some poetry competitions.

Perhaps there could be a separate open competition without form or theme requirements? Maybe just a maximum on the amount of lines?

I'd be interested to see the haiku thread revived. But what happened to the traditional haiku? A lot of people today believe a haiku's only requirement is the syllable count, and also write about unrelated themes. I always thought a haiku is supposed to be about nature, while a senryu is about human nature? Things change over time though, I suppose.

I understand that this forum is primarily focused on novel writing, but maybe more can be done to encourage poetry?

Anyway, I'll support any new efforts to revive the poetry scene:)

I personally don't like the idea of making the poetry contest totally open with no subject. I like the idea of people having to write something new. If the poetry contest was totally open, people could just enter one of the poems they have already written that they think is good, or do it if they haven't written anything new when the deadline is close.

Oh my gosh. You guys are having grammar issues. Not all of you, but enough to prevent me from continuing [shiver!]
