    Where do you write?

Discussion in 'General Writing' started by Aimster, Apr 8, 2011.

I'm currently too tired to begin working on a plot for my next short story, so I thought I may as well get some feedback from people on this forum letting me know where they enjoy either creating plots, or simply just writing in general.

I'm aware that some people enjoy writing in busier places such as café's or restaurants, whereas some people prefer more quiet areas such as libraries or the comfort of their own lounge. Everyone has different preferences, and I'm interested to know yours!

Personally, I can sit down and write literally anywhere. I have thought up some of my favourite plots whilst staring mindlessly at the wall in the shower, and have written some of my favourite creative writing pieces whilst sitting on the bus on the way to town.

So yeah, what's your favourite place to write/think up plots, and why? :D

I write on my computer. In my yellow room.
I usually think of ideas when I'm in the bath, getting ready for school, doing my hair...in a nutshell pretty much everywhere. ;D

I like sitting in my bed, buried in pillows and blankets with some quiet music in the background. That's when I really write well. I tend to come up with things while I work though... and that's annoying. I have to hurry and take notes between customers.

I'm the same with writing anywhere. Find me an odd corner to sit, and I will sit there and write and write :D

I almost always write on my computer. I get my inspiration from a variety of different sources though.

i have no 'favorite' place, since i will write anywhere and everywhere and it's only the writing that matters, not where i do it...

that said, i most often do my writing at my desk on my laptop, or on the sofa, with notepad and pen...

I write on my laptop, in my recliner, in my living room.

Anywhere but home. If I try to write at home I notice how much I need to dust, then I'll think how I could throw a load of laundry in the machine before I get started, etc.

I can plan, outline, edit, proofread, at home.

But the writing is done elsewhere. So long as I have a marginally flat surface, paper and writing implement I'm good.

I am starting to regret my conviction being over turned on a technicality .I miss writing in my cell, there are so many temptations on the outside. I am considering commiting a crime so I can get back to Angola (Louisiana State Penitentiary) so I can complete, "The Father, Son and The Holy Ghost," my Vampiric trilogy

I usually write in my bedroom, because it's the only place in the house that's quiet enough during the day! I like silence when I'm writing. When I lived in Canada, I used to go to the library to write, but there's no library anywhere near where I live now, so that's out.

I ususally write and type in the dean. I don't often write in my bedroom, even though the bedroom is close to the dean. I guess I do this in the dean because the computer is in the dean, though it isn't necessary for me to write by hand in the dean when I coud just lay in bed and write. Like Mia said, she doesn't have a "favorite place." --Neither do I.

Ah, it's nice to hear other peoples opinions on this.

Personally, as some people have said, I like to use a laptop to do my writing...it seems so much easier, since even when I'm writing out a draft, a lot of editing needs to be done before I am satisfied.

It's interesting how many people like quietness to write, whereas sometimes I like to turn on the television in the backgroud to break the silence. I'm not sure why, I just sometimes prefer it that way, haha.

I tend to do most of my writing while sat in the reclining armchair in our lounge, with my earphones plugged in to block out the TV. Only problem with this is I keep being pounced on by hyperactive kittens while trying to write.

I've tried writing in quieter places but I can't seem to focus if I have total peace. Plus, if I try to write in my bedroom I find I don't sleep as well - so I only use that room for sleep and storage.

For a while I was writing while chained to my desk. Now that I have a laptop and want to try cafe writing, I'm getting used to the machine while lounging in the recliner in my husband's office.

Usually in my room on my laptop. But I can write anywhere if I get the inspiration to do so.

For me it's not about where, but about what's in the background for noise. I'll usually throw one CD or playlist on repeat (something without lyrics or that is hard to understand; music in foreign languages is great!) and that really gets me in the zone. TV makes it hard for me to really get engrossed in what I'm doing. And if anyone is foolish enough to interrupt... they get my mad face.

    ^Haha, I'd do the same.

I write while lying in bed, sitting at the kitchen table, or loitering in the family room. Any place is good. But they tend to rely on background noises too. TV is the worst distraction. The internet is as well :p

I need quiet and no distractions, sadly that's a rare occurrence for me during the day, so I tend to write at night in my room on my laptop with some background music. If, however, I do get some quiet time during the day I take my notepad and write outside, where I can enjoy the weather and serenity.

I love writing by the sea. My best work has been done on beaches.

I tend to get out most of my best ideas as barely coherent scribbles, so I write my first draft freehand. So I always carry around all my notebooks with me (within which is the first draft of my novel) as you never know when inspiration is going to strike. Also, I live in fear of losing them, so if they're on me I know that won't happen. Hopefully. Unless I get mugged.

I prefer to write in nature, though I will write at uni, between classes. I get really good ideas around 1-3am, so I do a bit of writing in bed too, although generally that stuff is hard to decipher when I'm fully lucid.

I usually write in my bedroom on my laptop, just so I can focus. Ultimately, I'll write wherever there's a place for me to sit with my computer, but the bedroom's my favorite spot.

Depends. I write a lot on my laptop up in my loft/bedroom.

Sometimes I write in the garden or in the conservatory, in the park, on the bus, used to write at work sometimes (my bad...), as a teen especially sitting up a tree. The last one felt very freeing, just looking out over the landscape, listening to my walkman, thinking, jotting down ideas...

I mostly write on my laptop on the couch. But I take my laptop everywhere, the bedroom, the dining room, the bathroom :p

I started uploading a few things to Google docs, so I can use Gdocs and write on my phone. The app needs a lot of work, it destroys formatting of your documents for instance, which kind of sucks. But I can write on my laptop, put it down and go hop on a bus, and continue writing using my phone (it has an awesome qwerty keyboard).

I can't say I would recommend this to other people, this is just an experiment I'm doing. I like how I can work with the most updated versions of my documents from anywhere, but the format destroying thing is killing me.
