    Microsoft Word vs Google Docs

Discussion in 'Writing Software and Hardware' started by DrtraumaTy, Oct 10, 2016.

*Silly me! I accidentally put "Google Chrome" in stead of "Google Docs!" Sorry about that!
Hiyo folks, here's my first post.

I am curious in knowing what the community here finds as a better writing tool; Microsoft Word or Google Docs? I own both tools, however I am remaining very conflicted over which one to utilize for my literary works; as I write fiction, poetry, and systems.

Any insight over which is better would be greatly appreciated!

    All the best,
    -DrtraumaTy (Sail)

    Hello...

How exactly do you use Google Chrome to replace Microsoft Word? Do you use an add-on... maybe?

I think perhaps the OP means Google Docs?

My situation is quite reciprocal; I am using Microsoft Word, currently, to replace Google Docs. I have done so by copying my google files and placing them into my Onedrive.

Edit- I do realize now that I made an error in the original post with putting "Google Chrome" rather "Google Docs." I apologize for the inconvenience.

I edited the thread title as well for you so that there is no confusion. ;)

    Oh!

    Hehe... It's alright. It happens.

Well, Word does just fine for me.

Do you use Google Docs to be able to access your files across all your devices? Or is there something else? I've never used Google Docs.

I use google docs as it lets me access them on my phone and tablet, as well as any other PC with chrome on it. To me, there's very little difference between it and word.

Google Docs is perfectly fine for producing manuscripts.

I use Word with Dropbox so I can access from any device.

I don't think there's anything wrong with either. If you're a bells-and-whistles kind of writer, there's software designed to help with that (Scrivener, etc.), but if you're just looking for a program to place little black squiggles on a white screen, I don't think you need to be too picky. Editing may or may not be an issue, but writing shouldn't be.

It's worth pointing out that word has much the same functionality as Google docs where it comes to accessing your stuff anywhere, provided you use onedrive. I've never found any real reason to use one over the other.

Neither, though I like Word. I have been using Kingsoft Writer 2016 (basically word). :p

I don't like Google Docs because every time I've used it it hangs. Drives me insane. Also, I have a Windows phone, so I can easily access my files via mobile.

What browser do you use, out of curiosity. I've used it quite a bit, and for some long documents, and never had it hang on me.

Google Chrome. Happened to me on IE too. To be fair, I haven't forayed into Google Docs in a while, so maybe it doesn't hang anymore.

I use Chrome when I'm using Google Docs. It may be that it has improved since you last used it, or maybe a difference in hardware (though I use it on a Chromebook, which isn't exactly a powerhouse).
