    Silly font question

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by lameri, Jan 27, 2012.

For the rare event of having to write a word in quotations and italics (I have a character saying a foreign word), do you put the quotation marks also in italics? I would assume so, but the thing gets worse when I need to write a period right before the closing quotation.
    Thanks.

Normally you would not italicize the punctuation. I might make an exception for expressions like ¡Caramba!

Also, you shouldn't have adjacent punctuation stops, if that is what you are saying.

    Something like:

Wendall winked at the audience. "Et voila!"

    ?

Well, now imagine ¡Caramba! is part of dialogue, so you need quotation marks. Do you write "¡Caramba!" or "¡Caramba!"?
    Thanks.

The quotation marks are not part of the foreign word/phrase, so they are not italicized. The paired exclamation marks are part of the foreign expression in this case, which is why I would italicize them.

    I see. Thank you, Cogito.
