    Novel Question about novels

Discussion in 'Genre Discussions' started by mg357, Sep 13, 2014.

I have question about novels do 100 page novels exist?

The reason I ask is because I write in Composition notebooks and they are 100 page notebooks

and I want to write an entire novel 100 page novel in one of these notebooks.

We talk about length in terms of number of words, not number of pages. Based on the size of a composition notebook, I'm going to guess that what you have is a novella. While they do exist, there isn't really a market for them.

I wouldn't worry about writing a "100 page novel" - I'd worry about writing a novel that's good. The length will sort itself.

A novel is defined by either word count or scope of story. Whichever definition you use, a novel is almost certainly well over 40,000 words. 40,000/100 = 400. That means you would have to write well over 400 words per page to write a 100 page novel.

Count the words on some of the pages in your own composition notebook.

That seems like a kind of arbitrary goal. Is there some sort of notebook shortage? Why do you want to limit yourself to just one?

Well, I think you've challenged yourself to write a 100-page novella.

But... okay. If that's your thing.

There is no particular boundation of pages while writing novels. You should see a rule book for novel writing. The hardest bit of writing always comes at the 30,000 word mark. Keep going. After 50,000 the hill slopes in your favour.

Children's books can be around a hundred pages. I seem to recall Bunnicula was pretty short. ( Love that book btw! ) Palahniuk's novels are pretty short - I don't know about a hundred pages short, though. Jonathan Livingston Seagull is 127 pages but it's considered a novella.
    Sounds like an interesting challenge.
