How many words are needed for a piece of writing to be called a novella?

Discussion in 'Genre Discussions' started by JaketheNinja, Jun 16, 2012.

Just wondering, in your opinion, how long a piece of writing needs to be (at the very least a novella)

I'm asking this because one of the books I'm writing at the moment has 26,882 words, and will be finished (first draft) in just over 3 chapters time (av. 1,800-2,500 words a chapter)

    Thanks

A quick google would have given you the answer I'm about to give: it said between 20-40K. (some even said up to 50K)
