    Writing Contest!

Discussion in '"I never believed in hell"' started by Daniel, Nov 5, 2006.

Okay, we're pleased to announce our first writing contest.

This contest will follow the theme of "this sentence starts the story." Basically you take the sentence I give you and write a story on it.

The sentence: I never believed in hell.

The first sentence of your story must begin with those words. You can change punctuation only by adding quotes, but all else must be the same.

The story can be any genre with any theme.

The deadline for submissions is December 31st at 12PM. This gives you just under two months to submit.

You story should be between 1,000 and 8,000 words in length to qualify.

The prize for this contest is a $25 paypal deposit and a special user title here at writingforums.org. (this includes colored username, larger PM box, etc).

EDIT: I've decided to make this contest free for all users.

    Register to remove this ad

There is no longer a fee to enter. Anyone can enter the contest. One entry per person. More than one entry will automatically disqualify you. Submit a thread with your story in this forum.

I've also made a changing to the judging. I will select 5 stories that I think are the most professionally written and we will then have a member-voting on it. The voting booth will be open for one week after the results are listed.

I hope these are all constructive changes.

If you have any questions regarding this, please feel free to ask.

EDIT: changed it to clarify. Only quotes may be added for punctuation. You cannot add to the sentence.

How come there can't be a voting system to decide a winner?

As for the voting system, It just cant be made to be fair because of the come and go nature of forums like this.

Anyway, I am unable to use paypal so im not sure if I can pay but is it ok to come to a deal with you Lp because If I won, I would probably give the prize money anyway?

I'd like there to be such a system, but I can't think of a fair way to do it. Most people who vote might simply not read all the competing stories.

Nexus - something might be able to be worked out, but the fee was going to be to pay for the prize.

Thats what I was thinking, I guess I just wont take part in the contest. I dont really have time in my lovely chaotic imagined life right now. But take heart that I will help judge!

P.S. About the voting thing, well, its up to you to tell the staff what you think. You can always be an influence....
(Bribes will be accepted, please PM and further arrangements will be made)

    *cough cough*

    No goody goodies heard that.

How bout a simple 1-5 rating scale, 1 being 'well that story was a bit meh' & 5 being 'wow that story made me happy in my special place'.

And so no-one can just create a new user and give themselves 5's you have too have started 3 threads and, or have 100 posts before the competition started.

That may very well happen but i think its worth the risk.I'm just not sure I'd pay to enter a competition if a individual(and his purple buddys) not a community decides the winner.

    I have updated the contest.

    1) Anyone and everyone may submit for free.
    2) Judging will be done by the members by the 5 stories I select.
    3) The $25 prize remains.

Getting to work on in it now (and thanks for waiving the submission fee - I wanted to submit but didn't necessarily want to set up a paypal account to do so. Perhaps, when there are more members and the prize money can be a bit higher you will get more interest from people to pay a submission fee.) Thanks for putting this together LpSpider - when's the deadline again?

The deadline to submit is December 31st. If there aren't enough submissions I may postpone the deadline a week or two, but I don't foresee that.

So as of now, December 31st it is.

Prize money will be received through paypal.

Winner will also have the option to have their story included in the Winter ezine issue.

I'd also ask that people not comment on submissions until after a winner has been decided - to keep things fair.

You sign up for it like you would for Amazon.com or any other place you might shop. The difference is that PayPal is set up specifically for online money transfers - so it's kind of like an online bank...kind of. You will need to put in some personal info when you sign up then, basically what happens when you win the contest is that the $25 will be placed in the writingforums account which will then be transferred to your account. You will receive the payment to your paypal account which you can then transfer to your bank account. It's secure and considered the safest way to transfer money over the internet.

Would it be possible for me to just enter for fun, and not get the money if I do win? Because I think it would just be fun to participate, and I don't really desire a cash prize if I may win. Just knowing that I'd won would be fine with me.
