    How big is your graveyard.

Discussion in 'General Writing' started by Alejandro89, Apr 4, 2016.

And by graveyard I dont mean how many people you have killed, but the amount of, lets say, irredeamable material you have produced. You know, the kind of stuff you were happy to write, but maybe you will never go back to, not stuff you abandoned, but finished and were happy they remain unread by anyone else. I got a couple of early novels that I think It would be better if I just rewrote them. I miss their characters, but the texts inthemselvs are too green. How about you?

I've had a few amusing bits and pieces, archived, not published. Could be much more potent when combined. Except I have no instruction manual for this Frankenstein.

In one way or another, I'm proud of most of my stories, even the really early ones where I was still figuring out technical stuff. I tried to write from the heart, so even the most unpolished stories still had an emotional impact. The few that really sucked are already on the Internet anyway, so it's a little late to retract them.

I probably have 100s of single paragraphs outlining potential ideas. But that's as far as I will let myself take anything, until I finish my current project.

Thats a interesting quandry writers in the digital age have, I wonder how many of the greats would have felt if their beginners work had been avaible to everyone, on the other hand, it can really help in the development of a young writer having, not five people, but the whole web helping them progress as writers

As a child/teenager, I wrote more short stories than I can even begin to count. I also wrote a "novel" (lol far too short to actually be a novel) and a novella as a child. As a teen/young adult I wrote a science fiction novella that I've been contemplating if I should post it here for critique since I have no intention of publishing it, but I'm not sure if there'd be any point to that. I've written several short stories as an adult as well. So my graveyard is moderate, lol.

I almost forgot! As a teen/young adult (17 or 18) I published a sort of fan fiction piece on a forum. I wrote part 1 and part 2, and was going to write another but never finished it (both of them could stand alone though). However I'm not sure if it was long enough to count as a novel, and I probably will never show it to anyone else. Although in its own special way I'm pretty proud of it.

Ooooh myyy. Please note, the following list is stories that you COULD read right now. As in, they exist on paper as actual attempts at storytelling, and not just as drafts or outlines. I have brainstormed, outlined, and discarded SO many other ideas.

    In chronological order...

-Two Starcraft I Fan-fictions novellas about Zeratul and his son 'Zanitar'.
-A rewrite of the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command movie, with Starcraft I characters and places.
-Several Calvin and Hobbes rip-offs with me as Calvin and Hobbes as a wolf.
-A eighty episode TV show script with me and a girl werewolf living in suburbia.
-A time traveling book with me and my werewolf friend going to medieval times to fight dragons, giant squirrels, and meeting another werewolf.
-Half a book about two lizard-men brother's joining the crusades that I might finish someday.
-A ten episode TV script about 'bean people'(The food. Little oval people with little feet and legs) fighting in a war against peas, corn, and baby carrots.
-Twelve episodes of a punk-future space adventure TV show about an ex-soldier and ex-marine turned mercenaries.
-More episode of the TV show about me and the girl werewolf, but with all my siblings, a dragon, and Sephiroth added.
-A series of three children's books about a little girl and her imaginary friend 'spotty', a white and red polka-dotted, British lizard.
-Half a book about the punk-future space adventure mercs that I am still brooding over.
-A nineteen-thirty's noir crime thriller novel with a down-on-his-luck private eye chasing a transsexual hit'man' that has NOT aged well.
-More episodes of the TV show about me and the girl werewolf, except with me as a marine.
-A short novella about time traveling wizards trying to research and leverage salvaged technology from the future to gain power in their own time.
-A novella about four prisoners of four opposing races escaping a dungeon in the desert to gain political and military power in a city.
-My current WIP, a Novel about slave soldiers waking up and trying to figure out and succeed in war.
-A Lovecraftian'esque short story about a girl and a dark god.

Hmm... I've still got all the stuff I wrote when I was growing up; it's stuffed in a binder in my parents' attic. As far as things that are digitized: a crappy novel and half a dozen short stories. There were a couple more shorts I wrote in college that are lost (I really wish I'd saved the one), and another start to a novel that I'm going to incorporate into the new world I'm using (also lost, but it wasn't far along, and I remember enough of it anyway).

About 100 pages in all. I was a dumbass 10-11 years ago when I thought I was good at this whole writing thing. Who knows I might just add to that in the future, considering I have a few shorts in the works that have kinda fallen off the map. Oh well learn by doing I suppose. Also not thinking that I am any good at it, though I do enjoy spinning a good yarn. :p

I rarely kill off any characters because I just feel bad. Almost all dead characters died before the events of the story. I think I should try to kill off some characters, but I don't really know how to write reactions to that, since I wasn't close with anyone I knew who died. I guess maybe I should kill off a minor character (maybe even one who wasn't even there before), just for practice.

Perhaps somewhat uniquely I don't think I have a graveyard. I came to writing late having already prove to myself I could write long form things that held together (assuming I had enough drugs in my blood anyway) and after that writing fiction was a genuine pleasure and I've seen everything I've tried to write through to the end and been happy with it. There's stuff I've left intending to come back but nothing I've felt 'Oh god, no' about. I've written plenty of supplemental (and let's face it; pornographic) material that's there for my enjoyment and to blow off steam but that's not the same thing either. Everything is in canon with the actual books, it's just not shown.

Oh, I think it's about twenty people now, wait, (re-reads OP) disregard that.
Well, I have a few things kind of locked in "I need to fix this" limbo that I might delete if I can't better them. But that's about it. I love my ideas! (snuggles up with them) How could I not share them?
