Who knows whether this thread will fly like a kite, or drop down the pages of this forum like an ice-axe dropped from the west face of Mount Everest, but I'll run this up the flagpole and see who salutes. How about a thread where we come up with metaphors, then challenge the next person to come up with one? I'll give a metaphor. "I've only got your best interests at heart," she said with a smile as fake as the 'Mona Lisa' I purchased for twenty-five francs in a Paris back alley. And the challenge: Express through metaphor a really soft, crumbly chocolate cake. If anyone's interested, respond by giving a metaphor and then another challenge.
The chocolate cake was as so malleable, it disintegrated like a politicians pre-election promises. Express through metaphor: A badly made cup of tea.
(This reminds me of the joke whereby it is announced that British Rail are raising the price of tea by 5p a slice). Drinking John's tea was just like drinking mouthwash, except that mouthwash would leave your mouth cleaner than before you drank it. EDIT: Hmmm... I like the image, but that needs rewording. Express through metaphor: A car that is really, really, badly maintained.
My dad's old car is like the old man himself, that is unresponsive until the seventh try and farting uncontrolablly, no to mention the air condtioning... (Is what we're doing metaphor? Isn't it imagery? Comparison? Example: Metaphore: The heart of the sea. Comparison: Swimming in the sea was like resting in my mother's womb again.) Express through metaphor: A really silly couple.
I don't mean to be a stickler or anything, but are we using Similes or Metaphors? Because a lot of these examples are similes. Anyway... The lovers were Dadaists, mocking their own craft. Metaphor: A very cold evening.
I've gone through life thinking that similes are a type of metaphor. It turns out that I was wrong. EDIT: No way to change the thread title to "Let's see some similes and metaphors". The evening air was a swarm of icy hands, gently fondling my face, my neck; every bit of exposed flesh they could find. Metaphor: A person playing the saxophone badly.
In the bright morning sun, the lake was a big dollop of blue paint that had dripped off a palette onto the moor. Metaphor: A catchy song.
For most members of the maths club, being stuck in an elevator with half of the cheerleading squad was the stuff of dreams. But Gregor's throbbing bladder was a flashing red light indicating humiliation in five, four, three, two .... Metaphor: an aggressive door-to-door salesperson.
The banana's flesh was smooth and soft, like sweetened putty; a delicious melt in your mouth putty. This is what Jacqueline had been missing out on due to her lifelong fear of the colour yellow. Metaphor: The Eggheads (UK TV quiz team) are failing to answer any of their questions, even the easy ones.
