    Writing for video games

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by chuckb, Nov 3, 2007.

    Hi,
I like to create video games and enter them into contests on the internet. I'm at a point in my hobby where I wish to develop team building skills with others on the internet. I've avoided adding any writing to my previous games because I lack the basic skill (and time).

I registered tonight in an effort to locate a writer interested in working on a computer game for another programming contest. If you are interested and have thought about writing a back story, some dialog, narratives, etc. for a small game please consider the following.

I and two others (musician and artist) are working on a game programming entry due April 2008 called "Jed, Ted and Fred". It's a game set in 1880 in a mining camp in North Carolina, USA. (its a tycoon game...similar to railroad tycoon). We're looking for someone to write dialog, narratives...with comedy and using some words from that era. Humor should not be sarcastic..but witty and child friendly.

I have a draft specification. I can provide a link if you are interested in reading the back story to the game. A writer would be given significant freedom with the details...and even allowed to suggest significant changes to the overall theme.

I can be reached at cpp-programmer@sc.rr.com.

I can provide you links to my last two games for you to test. If this project is 'too' long we have 4 week long contests starting every 8 weeks. The next one begins Nov. 16th. There are several of us programmers who are interested in working as a team.

I'm new so I can't post any links yet. I can provide them via email.

    Regards,
    Chuck Bolin

Welcome to the Writing forums. This is the first time I'm met with someone with this idea in mind. Anyways, since you're here for professional reasons, I'll explain to you the system around here, and how you can get along. Hopefully shouldn't be a troublesome thing and you'll decide to stick to us.

Here's a basic welcome from all of us. It should be obvious, but in case it isn't, let me explain. The Writing Problems Area is exclusively where opinions on different ways to write, blockages in writing styles and similar problems can be discussed. In the Review Rom, you can get critical appreciation and/or analysis of your written material. Behold, you must first review two pieces of writing before posting your own. This is ensure the pieces are evaluated to the most. Other than this, we have Writing Cotnests, weekly and monthly, where you can submit your writing. We also have Word games, Book Discussion and so on, classified under Community interaction. It may interest you if you're just hanging around.

adamant has been kind enough to put many of the things I have mentioned or missed out on in one comprehensive place. If you want to check it out, see the Newbie Packets:
    Noobie Packets! - Writing Forums

Enjoy it here, and don't feel shy to ask for help. We are all here to teach and learn in a mutual environment. And we hope you can do the same.

    Regards and Best Wishes!

    Banzai and Anthraxx,

    Thanks for the welcome!

Great! I'm glad its original. I don't do that too often. :)

Reasons are purely amateur. Perhaps this team effort may result in a professional work down the road. :)

    Regards,
    Chuck

Hello Chuck, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners.

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize reviewing as a critical writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room on this site, therefore, is a true workshop, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work. See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!
