The story so far: (set in medieval times no guns, some cannons) Rodrick is a human living in a city called "Gornal" ruled by dark skinned humaniods nicknamed the "NightKin" or as they prefer to be called "Sarcian". The Sarcians enslaved the humans hundreds of years ago, but as time progressed the humans have begun to outnumber the Sarcians. Rodrick works as a blacksmith's apprentiice for his father until his father gets beheaded for forging an unauthorised sword for personal protection. Rodrick then inherits the smithy and vows revenge on the NightKin. A few years later Sarcian reinforcements for Gornal are ambushed by tribal troll-like creatures known as the Grop, leaving the NightKin in the city greatly outnumbered by human slaves. My question to you is this, how can the revolt start? I was thinking something along the lines of a tavern brawl turning into a riot, but after thinking about it, it sounded silly. Here's some facts to assist you: Rodrick has the ability to move abnormally fast (roughly 1.5x faster) and become abnormally strong for a limited amount of time (Tires easily). Rodrick has an older brother who is a barkeep in a tavern. Rodrick has a friend who is a generic intellectual. The Nightkin are twice as strong as humans at night but are equal in sunlight. You answered your own question, or at least began to when you stated, "all slaves want freedom." Does it have to be your main character who starts the revolt? Are there other characters in the story who might be more revolutionary? Are there rebellious factions in the city? How tense are the inhabitants of the city? I suppose, if your looking for more specific reasons, take into account... Food supply: hungry people are desperate people Crime rates: means a weakening of the government Administration: is the government doing anything to insight dissention? There is a lot to consider, it all depends on how much you have and want to work with.
Yeah all the slaves "want" freedom but something has to start it. No, the main character doesn't have to. Maxwell is more. Nope. Very. Decent food supply, fair crime rates, and besides enslaving the humans not really, altough... It could be triggered by the government... Thanks for your help mate!

Be warned, I believe that the game, Fallout: New Vegas, had a race called the Nightkin. I'm not sure if names like that can have copyrights, but it's something to look into.
