    G'day From Down Under!

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by Shadz91, Jul 9, 2011.

    G'day guys and girls,

The name I go by is Shadz....well here anyways. I have always enjoyed a good story, sadly it seems that there are less and less good stories to read (for example Twilight, no offense to anyone who likes it but I personally felt physically ill just trying to read the first few chapters of god awful grammar), so I turned to reading fan fictions. I have to say there are a lot of talented writers out there but they just seem to be content with that.

After years of reading fan fiction (and I do mean years) I have found that there are few stories to keep my interest. So now I wanna try my own hand at creating a good story.

I am tempted to create a journal/blog as a way to monitor where I started and how far I will go. I am not expecting to be able to produce the next big story. I am just expecting to learn a few skills and put them into action. And maybe waste a few hours on the computer :D lol.

Hello Shadz, Welcome to the Creative Writing Forums.

Please read How to Use the Writing Workshop before you try to post there. Posting your own writing for people to comment on should not be among the very first things you do here anyway. It is worth taking the time to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog.

Also, be aware that posting a piece of writing on any public site, including this one, will greatly diminish your chances of selling it for publication. Removing the writing later does not alter that fact - once posted, it is irreversibly considered published. So do not post anything more than a small excerpt of any piece you are planning to submit for publication.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Writing Workshop, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate.

As for the Writing Workshop, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize constructive critique as a vital writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. We also impose a two-week waiting period before you may post writing for critique, to give you time to become familiar with what is expected and how the site operates. The Writing Workshop forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Writing Workshop forum). Also, please use the same thread for all revisions and additional excerpts from the same piece of writing. See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out the RPG forum for improvisational fiction. Also try our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!

Sorry for taking so long to get back to everyone. I had an exam for Economics worth 40% of my grade and I was really stressing for it.

    cruciFICTION:
Hey mate, glad to hear it. Most boards I have been on barely have any Australians and constantly ask me what's it like in the bush. it just hasn't sunken in yet that the majority of the Population in Australia are in the cities. I should find it insulting but they always sound so hopeful and it's just not in me to correct them lol. I have recently moved from NSW to QLD...and before you ask no it was not because of State of Origin though I do cope a lot of flak because of it. It was mostly because of uni...and the lifestyle which is always a bonus :D.

    Socrates and Gigi_GNR:
Thank you for the warm welcome. To be honest I thought I would post here once and nothing would happen glad to be proven wrong :D.

    Cogito:
Sorry I should of been clearer. I don't plan to post here for a long long time. I would rather take the time to sit down and do the research before producing work. Nor am I really aiming to become a writer for my profession. This is merely a side hobby which I love with a passion.....probably obsessively but hey it's better than a lot of other things I could be doing. As far as reviews go sign me up! like I said before I have read fan fiction for a long time and I am proud to say I have helped a lot of writers become better (one example is this amazing author who wrote a pretty realistic AU ,Alternate Universe, story on naruto. Windschild was amazing but she lacked in the action writing department. But after a bit of work she has really come into her own. I think last i heard of her she's still in uni but is close to publishing). Of course that could be my ego talking but we'll just wait and see if I can help other authors on here.

Thank you for all the links though. I have already read most sticky's in the different writing sections but it is good to be reminded. I have actually booked marked the RPG section with a few ideas for characters (but I am probably getting ahead of myself there). I can't say if I am going to do the contests simply because when I work under pressure I focus more on just getting it done than the actual quality. But hey who knows right :D

Once again thank you all for a warm welcome.
