    LIBRIS ooc discussion

Discussion in 'Role Play Discussion' started by ManOrAstroMan, Aug 14, 2016.

Here is the OOC chat thread for the LIBRIS rp. Post your character sheet here when I approve your character, and feel free to ask any questions about the game here, too.
I'll start with my own character sheet:

    Humbert character sheet

    Name: Humbert Malcolm Fenric
    Age: 30
Position: LIBRIS Field Agent, Team Leader
Type/Level: Big Bad Wolf, Level 4 (Tale Active/Averted). Originally activated as a 124 (Three Little Pigs), but the Narrative can drag him into any dog- or wolf-related story.
Physical: White; approximately 6'6", 230 lbs, and solidly muscled. Black hair, threaded with silver, golden eyes, noticeably fang-like teeth, angular features, and overactive follicles. Tapping into his role's power tends to make him look even more bestial. Pre-activation, he looked like a rather delicate and sweet lad, often compared to a puppy.
Dresses in simple black suits and ties, trying to look like a stock Hollywood Fed, but usually ends up looking more like a Mafia hitter. The tinted lenses he often wears to disguise the unnatural color of his eyes don't help.
Skills: a fully trained agent, with the necessary investigative education, firearms and self-defense training. Pre-activation, was studying to become an actor.
Powers: *Animal-keen senses, particularly hearing and smell, though his eyesight is still better than that of the average human.
*Enhanced physical capabilities; not exactly superhuman, but a bit stronger and faster than is typical for someone of his size and build. Tapping into the role can enhance this further.
*"Huff Puff"-- able to take a deep breath and expel a destructive gale, capable of damaging property. REQUIRES REACHING INTO THE ROLE AND RISKING LEVEL 5 STATUS. EMERGENCIES ONLY.
Flaws: *Hunger. Wolves always have huge appetites, and not necessarily for food. Humbert chooses to buy a lot of pork products to avoid becoming *that* sort of Wolf.
*Silver. Though not actually a werewolf, the modern interpretation of the Wolf as a lycanthrope means he can be seriously hurt by silver weapons.
*Sensory Overload. It's not unheard of for criminals to use overpowering smells and sounds to debilitate Wolves.
*Instincts. Territorial aggression and drive to hunt and kill are tough for him to ignore.
History/Personality: Originally a sweet boy with dreams of stardom, he studied acting, though his delicate build would limit possible roles. His name seemed a hindrance, too, so he started going by his middle name. Then came the Bacon brothers, three greedy and corrupt contractors who build dangerously shoddy homes. So shoddy, in fact, his grandfather actually died because floor joists gave way and collapsed. The third brother, though, had built a fortress of legal loopholes and bribed officials around them, protecting them from prosecution.
The Narrative, already having it's eye on Humbert "Mal" Fenric, pushed his frustration and anger into blind rage, driving the young man to take the fight directly to the brothers. Though the Bacons were so unimpressed with the angry, yet small and meek youth they let him in, the Narrative actually triggered a physical transformation, hulking him out, adding height and mass before theirr eyes. They fled, of course, but he pursued. Two of their homes were destroyed by the time LIBRIS was able to intervene. Their arrival was timely, since Humbert would have been fated to die horribly while breaking into the third Bacon home. LIBRIS covered up the real cause of the destruction. The Bacons were discovered to have bricks of cocaine stored in their homes for sale, and were jailed. Fenric was swept away, ostensibly on a vacation to cope with the death of his beloved grandfather, and his sudden growth was explained away as the result of tumors on his pituitary and thyroid glands.
Of course, LIBRIS couldn't just let an active Wolf out in society, so he was drafted into the agency.
Humbert was always a sweet, affectionate young man, though his activation has turned him a bit gruff and bitter, angry at his new lot in life, but knowing there's not really anything he can do about it. He's still an actor at heart, playing appropriate parts when dealing with witnesses or local authorities. He tries to be professional and and capable as an agent, holding on to the knowledge that what he is doing is helping others avoid his fate. He also misses the days when he didn't have to shop in the Big & Tall section or spend hours shaving and waxing to be fashionable. And though he'd always preferred well-built men, he often finds himself in close quarters with young ladies.

    Name: Jacob Rabinowitz (wink wink)
    Age: 19
    Position: LIBRIS secretary.
Type/Level: The Golem of Prague. Level 3
Physical: Tall and mucularly built. Brown hair, broken nose, always sporting a few day's worth of stubble. Has fair skin, that gives off the impression of being made of ceramics.
Skills: As a former Yeshiva student, Jacob knows alot about Biblocal and Jewish lore. He is an able hand to hand fighter, though he only gained martial arts training when he joined LIBRIS.
    Powers:

Superhuman phisique: Jacob can lift far more than an ordinary man, run faster and for longer periods of time, jump higher, hit harder. The more he leans on his abilities the stronger he becomes, and the more control the Narrator has on him. (Let's say standard form: can lift a car, run 30 mph, and pretty much knock a guy out with one punch.)

Clay form: by bandaging himself with mud, Jacob can regenerate almost any injury in an hour. (This draws him towards his story much faster.)

    Weaknesses:

Obedience: Jacob will follow orders from his superiors without question.
Clay form: his body has some claylike attributes, and heavy blunt blows (not fists, but a heavy hammer or getting hit by a car) will hurt him more than a regular man.
Vow to protect: Jacob will go to all lengths to protect his friends, those he is designated to protect, or anyone he sees as weak, going as far as taking a bullet for an old lady he just met. (unless this conflicts with orders he recieves.)

Personality/History: Jacob was born in New York, to an ultra-orthodox Jewish community in Brooklyn. From a young age he felt the need to protect the weak people around him. Kids bullied at school, elders struggling with their daily chores. He was a quiet and well behaved child, then teenager, who wouldn't have gotten into any trouble, had it not been for his tendency to get into fights that were not his own. Always on the verge of expulsion, his Yeshiva always allowed him "one last chance", won over by his quiet and conforming demeanor.
His community lived peacefully with their neigbors, except for small gangs of teenagers, who saw the Jewish boys as easy prey. Jacob sat with a group of friends who decided against shutting up, and taking the fight to them, dragging Jacob with them. That night the activation happened. Jacob was being beaten in the mud, when he suddenly found the strength to stand and punch one of the children through a wall. The police came the following morning to find a boy dead. Jacob was nowhere to be found. Frightened, and not wishing to cause his family pain, he fled his community.
LIBRIS managed to get hold of the boy, and offered him a job at their desks. However obedient and docile he may seem, his rebelious streak is still there (evident by his non-religious lifestyle). Knowing the end of his story, LIBRIS try to keep him away from any violent or morally challenging tasks.

    Name: Ella Schmidt
    Age: 22
    Position: Libris Field Agent
Type/Level: Level 3 Faustian Devil (However, her narrative will draw her into any story where a deal with the devil is made.)
Physical: A lithe 5'5" woman with almost unhealthily pale skin and hair that is normally black, but she keeps dyed a dark auburn. Has sharp green eyes that seem to constantly judge people.
Skills: Relatively skilled marksman since joining LIBRIS, talented musician.
Powers: Ella's power takes The Narratives ability to shape the world to its horrifying extreme, both in terms of harm and help it can do. Anything Ella promises in her deals will come true, however, if the person breaks the terms of the agreement, they will die. Normally this is something simple such as a sudden illness, however, in one case the person was driven to suicide after the loss of multiple family members.

Perhaps the worst thing about her is that she can often enforce a narrative onto another person, forcing them into a situation beyond their control, and one that often ends poorly.

Weaknesses: No close combat skills whatsoever. If a deal is possible she cannot refuse it.

History/Personality: Ella was forced into her role at age thirteen, when her eighteen year old brother was running low on money and had to pay back a few debts. She presented him a coat that he had to wear for seven years, and told him that if he wore it, he would not have money troubles so long as he lived. He jokingly accepted, and managed to get a solid job the next day. She ensure he kept the coat on for the full time, allowing him to live through the story, though causing two suicides in the process.
The second case of her power was when she was forced into the Faust story at age fourteen. A child at her school wanted to do well in her exams, so Ella gave him three wishes, and was told if he used them all, he would die. It was five years later when the body was found, and it was at this point that Ella came to the attention of LIBRIS. She was under observation, though not taken in. That wouldn't happen for a few years.
The third death involved a woman who wanted to see her family before Christmas. However, if she did not return to where the was when the deal was made two days afterwards, she would suffer the consequences. And so he did, dying in a car crash that also hit a passerby. It was at this point she was taken in and made a deal to be an operative, instead of rotting in a cell somewhere.

Only she knows how many deals she's made so far, many of which she regrets, though has been drawn into her anyway. At the moment, she's practicing playing the fiddle. Whenever someone asks her why, she gives a cruel smile, before a sombre look crosser her face.

Name: Dr. Fringilla Feiss, D.M., D.Sc.

    Age: 31

Position: recovering ME, being used as a consultant, researcher, and investigator

    Type/Level:
She is a classic Type-812, with a tale loosely mirroring the life of Faust. Her abilities have been likened to those of a Type-565, but any tales involving forbidden knowledge or deals with the devil have the potential to draw her in as a victim or provocateur. She briefly peaked at level 5, but it severely damaged her mind, leaving her somewhere on the spectrum between 3 and 4.

    Physical Appearance:
Caucasian female, 5’11” 120 pounds, green eyes, thick red-framed glasses, and long dark-blonde hair, often styled in a bun, rarely loose. Her wiry build, and affection for wearing heels makes her appear taller than she already is. Fond of button-up shirts, pastel sweaters, and comfortable, ankle-length skirts. While she isn’t exceptionally beautiful, she does have a certain librarian/schoolteacher charm that some may find appealing. Speaks with a posh British accent.

Skills: She is a medical doctor, with all the skills and training associated with that, and is fully fluent in English and German, and passable in most European languages.

    Powers:
Forbidden Knowledge: Feiss is (or was, depending on one’s interpretation,) a vessel for all the knowledge in the world, everything that has been, is, or will be. There is still some debate about whether she still has this knowledge, buried deep within her subconscious, or if she was never able to handle it and only retained small snippets. She has the ability to dredge up forbidden knowledge using simple stimuli. For example, she can know the contents of a new book simply by touching it, as if she has already read it and just needed the touch to jog her memory. Sights, sounds, and smells can bring seemingly useless and random facts to mind, though never enough to paint a full, coherent picture.

    Flaws:
Mental Break: To put it quite simply, Feiss is ‘insane.’ There’s no exact word or diagnosis for what is wrong with her, but she can’t seem to hold a clear thought without tremendous effort and is prone to going off on tangents. She may have all the knowledge in the world, but her ability to connect the dots is severely compromised, making her an erratic investigator, at best, and a rambling mess, at worst.

Greed: Feiss chases knowledge the way some chase power or wealth. If there is a huge discovery to be made, her morals take a sharp turn for the worst. A mad scientist lurks somewhere deep within her and can rear its ugly head when you least expect it. She is not above toying with people in subtle ways; the world is her laboratory and everyone a guinea pig.

    History:
German-born and Oxford-educated, the life of Fringilla Feiss has been shaped by an insatiable quest for knowledge. Her father died of a rare genetic disorder when she was very young and her only memories of him were tainted by visions of sterile hospital halls. She resolved early on that she would become a doctor, not out of grief or a desire to avenge him, but out of the prideful belief that she could do better.

And she did. By age ten she was reading on a collegiate level. By twelve, she was playing chess, via internet, with the national champion. By fifteen, she was finding errors in the published works of world-class researchers. She received the Rhodes Scholarship before she was old enough to drive. But none of this was enough to satisfy her. It was all knowledge for knowledge’s sake, useless factoids to fill an ever-deepening void in her life.

The Narrative’s grip on her intensified when she arrived in the UK and met her dorm mate. The student’s name differs every time Feiss recounts what happened. Later investigations of the school records by LIBRIS show she had no roommate, but Feiss swears the girl existed, and was, in her own words a, “self-proclaimed practitioner of the occult arts, who regularly tried to seduce me to the dark side.” Despite their differences, they became fast friends and Feiss acknowledged her as an intellectual equal, with whom she regularly engaged in philosophical and academic debate.

The turning point came when her mother was diagnosed with the same rare disorder that had taken her father and Feiss descended into insanity and obsession in pursuit of a cure. Her friend offered an easy solution: make a deal with the Devil. Feiss had never been a pious woman, but firmly felt that she had no need for God or the Devil. Her pride wouldn’t allow it. She rejected the dark arts, as she had done for years… and her mother died.

With nothing left to lose, turning to witchcraft didn’t seem so bad, but what could she possibly ask the Devil for? Knowledge, of course. All the knowledge in the world. “It will destroy you,” her friend warned, but, after so many years together, Feiss already knew the ritual; she didn’t need her friend’s help or permission. And so a devil was summoned and a deal struck.

Dr. Feiss remembers very little of that day. Her life is divided into two phases: before the gift, and after. She awoke in the care of LIBRIS. They had been pursuing a potential Mephistopheles. Instead, they found a Faust.

    Personality:
Doctor Feiss has completely changed from the person she used to be. Glimpses of intelligence can still be seen, though she is now absent-minded, forgetful, ditzy at times, and prone to distraction. But ignorance is bliss; her mental break has made her a much nicer and happier person, with no inhibitions or ambitions. Her constant smile, unguarded demeanor, and willingness to embrace anyone (sometimes literally) puts others at ease. But she is not all smiles; her lust for knowledge is still very real and she can become dangerous when on the verge of a breakthrough. She almost never uses her first name; as a child, she went by “Fran,” then grew into “Feiss,” “Dr. Feiss,” or just “Doc.”

@ManOrAstroMan you're probably tired of my questions, but here is another one. What happens in stories where there is more than one version (without LIBRIS intervention)? Will the ending be a brutal Grimm style death, or more like a disney movie?

Multiple versions gives the Narrative options. LIBRIS urged Disney to popularize softer versions of stories. These became the most prominent in the collective unconscious, and thus more likely to happen, but that also means that it's easier to sneak in a more grisly turn of events while everyone is expecting sparkly Disney magic.

    Name: Jessamine Longbranch
    Age: 27
    Position: Libris Field Agent
Type/Level: Level 5 Enchantress (aka Good Witch).
Physical: Jessamine has wavy black hair that grows to her knees, a dark olive complexion, almond-shaped brown eyes, striking cheekbones, full luscious lips, an hour-glass figure, loves gold jewelry, and Stevie Nicks is her style icon.
Skills: Jessamine knows one or two fighting tricks (such as how to knock someone down or twist their arm behind their back), is an excellent seamstress, a beautiful singer and dancer, and gives amazing advice whether you ask for it or not.
Powers: Feather Fall- Like any talented witch, Jessamine can levitate, which accounts for her natural aptitude for flips and tumbles. She can leap far distances and jump to the ground from high places without injuring herself.
Light Magic- Jessamine can summon light and shape it into a shield. The light shield has the ability to deflect black magic or any ordinary weapon. She can use light to heal wounds or illnesses, break hexes, or simply to see in the dark. She can also shoot beams of light to break barriers or knock people aside.
Weaknesses: Jessamine cannot directly kill someone and she finds it extremely difficult to hurt someone. The only time she doesn't hesitate to use lethal force is if she is defending someone else.
History/Personality: Jessamine comes from a family that has been rich for many generations. She has never wanted for anything and has lived perfect life, with her loving parents and her charming older brother. Her parents were involved in a lot of charity work, though, and when Jessamine was seventeen they took her to the poor side of town where they were donating toys and clothes to people who were less fortunate. Jessamine immediately took a liking to a girl named Cindy who was wearing an old blue dress that was faded from being washed too many times. After talking to Cindy and learning about how she was being abused by her stepmother, a strange, powerful feeling came over Jessamine, and she knew that she had to help Cindy in any way possible. She gave Cindy clothes from her own closet, helped her get emancipated from her stepmother, and convinced her parents to let Cindy move in with them. Jessamine even set Cindy up with her older brother, who Cindy described as a "charming prince". The entire time Jessamine was helping Cindy, she felt herself changing and she let it happen, until it was too late and she became an enchantress. Jessamine spends all her time and energy helping other MEs and guiding them to their happily ever after, even if it means neglecting her own needs.

Also, on an amusing side note, I had originally imagined Ms Gosset as a Mother Goose. The fact that she is intimidating actually makes sense to anyone who has dealt with geese.

All we need is for someone to say "I'd kill to end world hunger, bring world peace, and generally have the world in a Utopian state for ever", then everything would be fixed.

Yeah, except to do that, the price will need to be outstandingly high, like trapping people in a state where they have nothing to strive for or something. I mean, deals woth the devil in folklore never really go well, unless you suffer horribly before your happy ending or find a cheating loophole like guessing someone's name

I did my research and there is one case where a man basically trolled the devil into leaving him alone. And none of them had a person that helps to grant happy endings on their side either. But yeah, it would probably end with the extinction of the human race before there was any chance.
