    Hi, New to the Site.

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by Coujoskia, May 7, 2009.

    Hi everyone :p,

Im Coujoskia, I'm from Australia. Im a mother of two children and I am very new to writing. I have only started writing poetry for the last month and I am currently writing my first novel which is a fantasy novel. I have written over 30,000 words since March, which I am proud of, but admit its hard work, but I love it.

My book is sort of a cross between Harry Potter and Twilight (but my vamps don't glitter haha) and charmed. Witches, Wizards, Vampires, Werewolves and Mythical creatures brought together with a plot of Federations and Dominions which fight in a war with a splash of romance added to the mix.

My grammar and punctuation is a weak spot for me (I admit I fell asleep in school when being taught it.) which I am now in the process of educating myself with books and sites to help me become a published novelist.

My idols are J.K. Rowling and Stephanie Meyer, because they are the reason I picked up my first book last year and they opened my eyes to my new world, which in turn sparked me to start writing, which I absolutely love.

I hope to be an active part of this site and to meet a lot of you in here and to be supportive and get those creative juices flowing. One thing I love and I am very good at is brainstorming, if anyone gets stuck with their writing, just let me know and i'll be glad to help.

    Coujoskia :D

Hello Coujoskia, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

Posting your own work should not be among the very first things you do here. It is worth taking the time to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate.

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize constructive critique as a vital writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!

Hullo, Coujoskia. I'm TheHedgehog, but Hedge will do. I am thirteen years old and a guy. I find it amazing that you've been able to write 30,000 words with what I'm assuming to be a very hectic lifestyle. How's it going?

Hi Coujoskia! CONGRATULATIONS on writing 30,000 words-You can do it! I am new here as well and wrote my first novel last year-I finished it up around 70K words. When I hit 30K I can remember how I felt-YES I CAN DO THIS! What an accomplishment! I am actually starting my second novel, it is very addicting after completing one! Have fun with your novel. If you ever need some encouraging advice let me know.
