    One good thing you could do is incorporate the theme of how mental disorders affect behaviour and the tension with moral responsibility for actions, especially as viewed by other characters and their difficulty reconciling facts to their reactions of indifference or impatience. And how they have the added stress of doing the right thing, but they are too jaded or embittered because they went through the same thing. Let the real story determine the plot if you want to share a truth.

    ETA: So I also agree with BayView that a story like this has a risk of only exaggerating the faults of the other characters, but they can still be satirized but let some humanity shine through them unless there's some kind of reason shared why they are sadists. Although I'm worried now that it might be too 1984y :p
