    RIP Pete Seeger

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by jannert, Jan 28, 2014.

Nothing to say, really. He lived a long and incredibly productive and positive life. Hard to think beyond him, really. He was so much a part of my musical and political life for so long. What a guy.

At least you were there at the start of it all, we have the memories, our house in New Orleans, you working at the Rising Sun, and me, I said it's my land, you said it was yours. Turn turn turn, you said. Puff I said, if I had a hammer, ehmm.

I was worrying about his death - the significance, and all, but y'know 94 is a good thing, and and...

Democracy Now played a recent interview with Seeger this morning and a short clip of an interview from 4 months ago. News coverage on the other stations has been absent. What an incredible life. So many people have no idea.

Yeah, it's hard to be grief-stricken when somebody has lived as long and productive a life as he did. Just an amazing guy, really. And he spanned SO many changes.

I got to see him perform live, once, back in the mid-70s. He appeared at Central Michigan University, in a small theatre. I was SO chuffed to be there. He was very funny, and still in fine form, in his 50s. I was a big fan of his brother Mike as well, and saw him at the Wheatland Music Festival. And I've seen Peggy perform with Euan McColl in Glasgow, so that's really the Seeger triumvirate, isn't it? Liked them all a lot, but Pete was more than just a musician.

Well, it's certainly not my favourite at all. But some of the traditional stuff they did was fantastic.

@jannert - That's his grandson, Tao, singing with him. It was at a concert at Wolftrap (Va.) in 1993.

This is one of my favorite Seeger songs, mostly because I remember the firestorm surrounding it when he first performed it on The Smothers Brothers Show. When he first appeared, CBS cut the song from the program. The Smothers Brothers threatened to quit, and Seeger was brought back a couple of weeks later to perform it. I found myself humming it a lot back in 2003.
