Something I've long believed in as a writer is making character's feel human. And one of the things I find important to that is neutral character traits. By that, I mean traits that aren't obvious includes for your basic character concept but rather expand the character. The more of these you have the more human you're character feels, but of course don't do too many or your character is equally fake in their overstuffed personality. An example of a character without many of these would be the bond Blofeld, who is more than a little inhuman with how little personality he has.(Which is fine, if you want a simplistic story) And an example of a character with a very good amount of these is Shadow from American Gods, who is shown with a diversity of personality and emotions. (Which might not be your thing)There are two kinds of these traits; reactive and independent. The first is in their relationships and reactions to plot points. The second is in their own raw thoughts, behaviours and mannerisms. Both of these are important. Now I must stress with the reactive, it is not about making them interesting by attaching interesting people and plot points to them. It's about the interaction being interesting on both sides. In the same way as their own individuals traits can't just be whatever flaws and eccentricities most obviously diversify them stuck on in a lazy attempt at deeper humanity. It has to fit together, mold together, flow into each other naturally. Don't rely on cheap gimmicks to make them complex, it won't work well. Using these, we can make characters who are more than just "the hero" or "the villain", who feel beyond that to a degree. Even to the point where it feels less like there is a hero or villain. When you give a character true humanity it's made more difficult to simplify them into role-players where they're judged cheaply. That's what I aim for at least. My stories are about people, not chess-pieces. Thank you for your time. Hope you have a good day.
So, if you're Australian, you've probably heard we're going to have a marriage equality plebiscite. that means every voter has to chip in "yes" or "no". I'm here to ask you to say "yes". Here's why: Estimates of same sex attracted (gay, lesbian or bi) population in Australia are around 5%. https://www.dss.gov.au/sites/default/files/documents/08_2014/national_ageing_and_aged_care_strategy_lgbti_text_version_0.pdf. (Probably higher because of closeted people) That means there are thousands of us. We are not invisible anymore, nor are we a tiny group. You probably have walked past hundreds. You probably have had a conversation with at least ten. Somewhere amongst your friends, family and colleagues; there is probably one or two of us. Are they sick or dangerous? In almost all medical opinions, homosexual attraction of any kind are not in any way sick. And there is no empirically verified test that demonstrates any danger or detriment. https://ama.com.au/media/ama-position-statement-sexual-diversity-and-gender-identity. There is considerable evidence that homosexuality has a biological origin so is not "unnatural". http://www.natureworldnews.com/articles/10443/20141118/homosexuality-genetic-strongest-evidence.htm. http://www.slate.com/articles/health_and_science/science/2013/06/biological_basis_for_homosexuality_the_fraternal_birth_order_explanation.html. But this is not needed to justify it's harmlessness. Human create technology, the primary thing called "artificial" and use it. You are using it right now. So why don't you stop your "unnatural" behaviour right now? It's a choice. right? "Traditional marriage" has no place in secular Australian society as a law. It infringes freedom of religion and separation of church and state to enforce this Abrahamic concept. Furthermore, the concept of marriage was not specified as homosexual excluding legally here until 2004. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recognition_of_same-sex_unions_in_Australia#Marriage_2.This cultural idea is not a long standing institution despite it's history. Marriage equality is not a new thing. It has been introduced in eighteen countries without damage. This includes many of Australia's allies like American and England. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT_rights_by_country_or_territory. Marriage is supposed to be a recognition of love, and there is no evidence that suggests we have a different form of feelings other than the sex of the partners we love. So why should that love be treated unequally? A same-sex relationship is like a woman's/man's relationship only both of you act like the opposite gender to the other. Recognizing this with the institution of marriage would be a powerful gesture of acceptance. http://williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu/research/marriage-and-couples-rights/ajph-decemeber-2012/. http://www.apa.org/monitor/2010/10/same-sex.aspx. https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/more-mortal/201506/the-psychological-benefits-legalized-gay-marriage. So please vote "yes" or if you can't vote share this with friends and family. And if that all doesn't convince you; consider this; if the tradition was same-sex marriage and you are straight and want to get married, would you really believe that was perfectly fair under other's ideas? Thank you for your time. Hope you have a good day.
My advice on coming out would be to not care. If people you care about don't accept you, you should consider moving on. the obvious problem being parents. Don't tell parents who majorly won't accept it until you're independent, otherwise you end up on the street or at least very unhappy. Everyone else though, fuck 'em. I'm barely experienced with bigotry, so I could be underestimating the aggressiveness of people, but to me, you may as well tell people eventually. Even if you don't particularly trust them, whatever. If they do something to you, that's their fault and they get punished. "Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken."-Oscar Wilde Thank you for your time. Hope you have a good day.
Hey guys, so I wanted to talk about my conceptions of storytelling that I use. Of course, being an amateur hobbyist, I'm not an expert. But I do believe there is logic in my ideas, and I have a great passion for the theory. Today I'll be talking about how I believe the themes, feel and event types of a story should be mixed; the more grounded the story the more so. I find with storytelling it's essential that it captures you in order to capture the reader. As a result, it needs to be involving. And so it should be that you spend time delving into a character. As such, with your major characters, I find it very important to display diversity in their lives. Show more than one thing they do, setting they go to, person they relate to. It tells you more about them, it fills out the story with more depth, and is entertaining for you to create more of them. This is the same with the themes and feel of the story. I like, for example, if the story is quite dark; most of my stuff is explicit, to mix it up with some humour and warmth. This makes it feel more real and less boring and lazily made. Depth is not just in showing one thing powerfully; it's in showing many things with that power. So broaden your storyline. Thank you for your time. Hope you have a good day.
So, has anyone else noticed, there's gotta be a bunch, that gay sexuality is given a different standard? The standard for gay people, especially the gay gays, being overly-flirtatious seems to be lower. You can get away with more sexual expression when you're straight. It's so bullshit to call it "shoving your sexuality in people's faces" when all you did was say a few guys were hot. Ever wonder where the stereotype of very sexual gays came from? One reason is people compensating for their time being closeted, but another reason is other people calling them that because of double standards. I myself am very open with my identity, but I don't go around going "dicks, dicks, dicks." (I might be thinking about one of my m/m couples in my stories though ) Another thing that's even clearer, gay sex scenes. The amount of explicitness in gay sex scenes, again the guys especially (stupid lesbian fetishism), is reduced from het scenes usually. Game of Thrones for example, has Renly and Loras, who we never get to see more than shirtless and kissing. There's even a trope name for this pandering; http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ButNotTooGay. It's very unfair to expect us to sit through your sex scenes, but our ones, ewwww. That's a double standard and you know it. You also know some of you are doing it because you're actually turned on but too insecure to admit perhaps even to yourself that dicks give you a bigger erection than boobs. (You know who you are you closeted fucks ) Urgh, thank you for your time. Hope you have a good day.
Anyone of you Americans heard of an Aussie band called TISM? They're a very social/political group that make strong statements in comedic songs performed in odd costume(not in clip). The point is there's this one song whose meaning is deeply chilling actually. At least to me. I want to talk about this and why this is so important to me. Here it is: . The idea is that humans are fundamentally distracted by mundane issues, events and desires from the social goods we believe in. It's sooo easy not to get involved seriously in them. To let the poor starve. The oppressed suffer. The diseased die. So on. And it's everywhere; look how much pop culture and gossip and personal issues and personal ambitions are promoted in our society. We're saturated with stuff that makes it easy to care while not acting on that care at all; so functionally not caring. I think that overcoming this is the highest goal of anyone who aspires to be morally productive as well as achieving personal benefits. We have to constantly remind ourselves that we all have a selfish instinct; that drives us to care only about ourselves and those around, giving passing mention to "ideals." To be truly moral I believe personally you have to be involved in some form of moral progress, either in your career or as activism, preferably both. I intend to contribute some form of study in my career, academics is my interest. I also like writing fiction as hobby, which can entertain and spread ideas of truth and morality. But I also strongly believe in advocating non-violence, civil rights and socialism. As well as my take on certain debates of understanding related to these. As a result, it saddens me to see how much our leaders represent a hesitance to move forward. We're scared of going too fast. But I say fuck that. We're not going fast enough, there is always more to do and we can deal with consequences by making informed decisions and providing preventative measures or counter-measures. Thus I identify as strongly progressive. Thank you for your time. Hope you have a good day.
