• Musings on Fritz Leiber

Here's a rather massive paragraph from the beginning of the book Witches of the Mind by Bruce Byfield, a critical assessment of the overall literary achievements of Fritz Leiber:
"In Fritz Leiber and Eyes, the best effort to define an approach so far, Justin Leiber (Fritz's son) takes this diversity (of his influences) for granted. "Fritz simply likes to write a lot of different kinds of things," he...
• A way to explain the Dunning Kruger effect

Put simply, the Dunning Kruger effect says:
Beginners are unable to see that their work isn't as good as the work of more skilled artists.
First to dispell a very common misunderstanding—it doesn't mean they're stupid. It just means they haven't learned certain things yet. I first ran up against this in drawing, and I think using some visual aids can help get the principle across clearly. One of the ways I've heard it put best is by drawing instructor Robert Beverly Hale in one of his excellent figure...
• LocalScriptMan videos

I already posted several of his videos on the topic of Character Web, but he frequently puts out great videos I want to collect where I can quickly find them. So here's a place to do that, no particular topic. What if Character Sheets weren't awful? He says he used to talk about theme (he sure did, it was all over his character web videos), but now he's moving away from that. It seems like he's working...
• Clarity, Power, and Discovery in Writing

This is actually stuff I've known and been doing (and promoting in here) for a long time. I usually talk about it in relation to journaling and what I call 'writing about a story before you write the story.' In each case they're ways of exploring, structuring, and developing your thoughts about a subject. You can also do that in freewriting if you keep it to a subject and don't just slap down pure gibberish (which is an extreme form of freewriting). I often start a writing session with some fun gibberish, silly rhymes, and anything that...

1. Nervous/excited

Well, i'm counting down the days until I can quit my job and go back to school in January. I just found out that 5 of my classes from my previous college transfer over to my new college! So, I don't have to start from scratch, which will be a relief. I'm anxiously awaiting November 5, because that is when I get to pick my classes :) Yay for higher education!
2. Wowzerz! my own forum!

Well, I have decided to give running my own forum a go. It's at www.writerscove.myfreeforum.org. So if you want to go and have a mosey around, feel free, it's only a baby so there's not much happenign at the moment!

Oh and I am not intending to steal forum members as I still enjoy this forum very much. I wanted, A: To get a little bit more of control with what happens, B To have a bit more of a relaxed place to chill out in.

While I do want other writers posting, it's not...
3. Oh Simon and Garfunkel. My poetic heart belongs to you.

I have horrible writer's block right now. My brain is stuck in a heap of mud unwilling to release itself. Nothing is being said. And what IS being said is pointless.

I can't write novels because I can't write. Period. And I can't write because I'm suddenly forced into a corner of complete utterances.

Though I think after all this time, I'd rather write in the calm consciousness of the night, in the dark and misty afternoons when all is in its right place; than in the bright...
4. Poem: Inferno

Inferno

The flames burn with ferocious grace
Contained within my fireplace
The embers slip, the black log falls
Flames clime up my chamber walls

The carpet burns, my chair leg flares
Demons look with red eyed glares
My trousers catch, I still lay still
Waiting for sweet deaths’ chill

The flames burn, my licker falls
The gates open, the devil calls
The flames spread towards my chest
Burning through my thin white vest

My life ebbs, my heart slows
Embers glow, deaths’...
5. Poem: Fear

Fear

I shall tell you of a story
Of death, blood and devils glory
This thing I speak of may be true
By telling I’m condemning you
But listen still if you please
For I lay on you a foolish gees
That if you tell others ask them this
Will they take the chance? That she will miss

It sleeps in shadow, its eyes glow red
Its spirit wanders, its half dead
And then again it will think
If one with life crosses its brink
It will lash with tendrils of a kind
And steal that unwary...
6. Baaaaaaaaaccccccccckkkkkk kkkk!!!

Yes, I'm back. Back, back, back. With a long weekend. Yay. I didn't review my date sheet, and when I did I realized my exams are finishing pretty early. Bleh.

I can't wait for Eid (Arabic for festival), it's coming on Saturday or Sunday, depending on the moon sightings (Muslims go by the lunar calender). Just for anyone to know, it's called Eid-ul-Fitr, understood as the day of giving and rejoicing. We fast for almost a month and then celebrate today as a thanksgiving to God's blessings....

7. Wow, damn it, err.... I have no idea.

Turns out one of the rule sets I have already written, Total Conflict: Ground Control is alot more versatile that I originally hoped. Seriously, with the set up of unit traits I could probably convert an army/faction list from most types of games (read sci fi) and get it to work with in my system without much effort.

I'm kinda stunned at this fact, honestly the document for the rules is rather chunky (over 100 pages I think) but consider it covers everything, aerial combat and deadly...
8. Ryboks Rat Pack: Cold Pursuit

And Finally I am satisfied with the first half of the story I have decided to post it up in the Novels section.

I have also finally decided on the name of the story lol.
9. Well I Threw Those Eating Habits Out the Window...

This afternoon we celebrated Thanksgiving with my aunt and her two daughters, my family and grandmother. Diets, portion size? Yeah, that didn't happen tonight. : p

I'm normally a really good eater, (I can go a whole day on one meal), but today was just.. insane. I swear I won't be eating anything tomorrow.

I've pretty much made a promise to myself after this experience; I'll eat when I'm hungry. Not before, and not after. : )

After a long day of talking, food and board...
10. Brothers and Sisters, it has finally happened!!

:pI have finally quit my job!

My last day will be a week from Sunday.

I'm so excited because, even though the atmosphere was really nice (for the most part) and my boss was probably the nicest boss I will ever have in my life, I just didn't have time to do relatively anything, and since while the paycheck was a nice CHA-CHING every week, it just wasn't worth my collapsing every night and staying up until 2AM to get homework done....
11. Grrrr!

I've written bits here and there, not novels, but a few short stories, and my sister in law's done some too which I've found very interesting. I'm now ready to start a much more detailed piece of work, and maybe progress onto maybe producing a novel (of some sorts). The idea is a little overwhelming, but I do love writing.

I've done a number of pages on this book, but it always comes into nothing, and in the end I only start editing the entire thing!

I feel in a bit of a rut at the...
12. Health issues, time off work and the warm heart of a cold corporation

The work I do is directly connected to both the mining industry in Western Australia, and the housing boom.

It's good because it pays well and has great incentives, but the work is brutally hard, I'm required to work a minimum of 12 hours a day, and in summer they send me into the desert to work on a minesite for three months.

A while ago I noticed a funny pain in my stomach/groin. I ignored it for a bit but it just got worse. I went to the doctor, who referred me to a better doctor,...
13. Internet Back...sort of.

I'm upgrading to broadband...hopefully.
14. Eat protein enriched foods gigp.com

Eating enough protein is so important for the health of our bodies, from our muscles to our bones, our hair, our nails, and skin.
The protein is in turn made up of 20 amino acids, protein’s building blocks. Nine of these, called essential amino acids, must be obtained from our diets.
The food we eat provides two main types of protein:
• Complete protein has abundant amounts of the nine essential amino acids. Eggs, whole milk, chicken, fish, beef and soy are all sources of complete...
15. My hair is falling out - Reallythin.com

Are you wondering why your hair is falling out when you wash or brush your hair?
I was wondering the same thing when I gave birth to my third child. Having three kids in a row can really deplete your bodies’ natural vitamins. If you have this problem, then I would suggest you do several things. First, get rid of any shampoo that you bought at a retail store. Try to get a natural shampoo at the health food store instead. Then take a multi vitamin every day- who cares if it costs 20 to 30...
