Anime, anybody?

  1. I've read manga since I was eleven. I know it's not what most would call literature, however there's one in particular that I've only recently finished titled "Fullmetal Alchemist". I find it interesting mostly because of the plot and wonderfully developed characters.

As the title suggests, it does involve alchemy, a very early form of chemistry and it is one series of books that I've found really interesting.

I was just wondering if anybody has read these.

If you're interested about it, here's a plot summary I've written: Edward Elric, and his brother, Alphonse, attempt to bring their mother back to life through forbidden alchemy. To do so, Edward unwittingly sacrifices his leg, and Alphonse loses his entire body, only to find that the resurrection was a fail. Attaching Alphonses's soul to a suit of armour, Edward and his bother go on adventures to get their original bodies back by finding the philosopher's stone. (That's right Harry Potter fan, I saw your eyes light up. )

Well anime is separate from manga, but I suppose the styles are the same. I am not familiar with the world of japanese anime, but I definitely enjoy the Miyazaki and studio Ghibli productions, also of Satoshi Kon, and I have seen some other films like The Girl That Leapt Through Time, and I greatly enjoyed the psychological thriller of Lain, the casual slice of life comedy of lucky star.

I know of and enjoy the phenomenon of alchemy --mystically intriguing. But I think the Japanese cartoon on the topic is a bit childish --too comedic and fantastic. However, as oriental anime go, it's alright.

The thing about the anime "Full Metal Alchemistic" is that the anime got ahead of the Manga which was written and illustrated by Hiromu Arakawa about halfway through the original series.

So the anime went off on a totally different direction, I actually think it was lamer and the final movie they made involving Nazi's "Conqueror of Shamballa" was odd to say the least.

So of course fans of the Manga were upset by this crap and the series was remade be truer to the Manga story.

I't was called in English "Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood"
and you can watch it without seeing the original series, the story is similar until about one third into the series.

Also I'd recommend seeing "Cowboy Bebop" that really is a cool anime.
