Before attempting a challenging book, ...............

By paperbackwriter · Feb 9, 2019 · ·
  1. Ask yourself why you are reading it.
Try to get a short summary beforehand.
Where does the book fit into your plan of study for self-education?
Ask is it worth reading the whole book. Scan if necessary to different sections.
Is there a need to read cover to cover?
Is there a summary on youtube?
Are there books or other sources which can break it down for you?
Allow an hour a day for reading challenging books.

I had to do this for "Paradise Lost" by Milton.
Im wondering whether a book like Homers Odyssey is worth looking at. or Ovid's Metamorphosis , for that matter.

I haven't finished Paradise Lost for the very reason you mentioned in the first sentence (why are you reading this?). My only reason was "its a classic" but I found it to be a classic turd, so I dropped it. :p

i wont read it cover to cover. but i want to pick up some of the style and the point of it all.
"better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven" is a good quote from it.
also when speakers like JP refer to it, I want to know what they are talking about.
I think it adds to my Christian education as well.
