Entering the Internet

  1. For a long I have wondered what it would be like to be internet-savy. The internet has been around since my childhood, and I recall there were more and more computers appearing in schools and homes. I remember the Atari. The commodore 64, the Apple Mac. Those wee tape decks and loading screens that made you feel as if you might be on some drug. Yes the noise it made gave you a headache, and the games were so terribly pixelated but it was a fun time. The idea of another world is scary enough, especially when I have found the outside world to be difficult enough.

Entering the internet I found it to be complex, intimidating and cold at times, though I also found it to be pleasantly interesting and addictive. I saw why so many people chose to live inside of the internet more than they appeared to outside of it. I am not old in years, but I am old in experience. The world has had some harsh lessons for me, and some life-changing ones, which I am grateful for. Life is indeed the greatest teacher, and it is up to each of us whether we choose to listen and learn of its teachings.

Today, I have some understanding of the internet and how to keep safe, after being stalked online and dealing with many online "trolls" -so I am not completely 'noob' but I am 'newbie' to forums. I wiped all my social networks after that terrible experience, and still I have no 'F-book' and no care to get one except that it is a brilliant platform for Authors.

I had always communicated via pen and paper up until fairly recently. What made me decide to change this and enter the internet was the knowledge and advice that I could use these online platforms to both research, learn and advertise for my own work. Nothing beats the library- the smell of a book is just un-matchable by any other means. But I can definitely validate the use of the online researching. You have so many options for learning- both open source and not. I find that open source sites like 'Wiki' can be filled of incorrect assumptive works at times, but on the other hand it has some excellent informative.

I am enjoying the journey thus far, and everyday I am learning how to be more 'internet-savy' and less 'newbie' but I think I will never understand all the strange "lol,' chatter and talk of this code and that. I must say though, I rather do enjoy the emoticons when it comes to explaining how you feel or what you are thinking.

I have joined chat rooms and now forums. I have made email, and researched using many resources, and now it is time to 'web-page.'

Until this is born- I will bid thee fare-surfing, and see you in the forum. Don't forget to stay safe in the web of internet-woven locations. There are as many dangers inside as there are outside.
