Guitar Progress [Can’t pick up picking up]

By OurJud · Jul 14, 2020 · ·
  1. As some light relief from practicing I tried to learn Misourlou but I’m finding up-picking very difficult. Tried using a thin plecky but just can’t stop it snagging on the string.

Maybe a heavier pick will help, since it won't be as bendy?
Perhaps even a small bass pick, will give you more control
with minimal pick to string contact. (also not bendy). :)

    Jazz III picks might help.

@Cave Troll - the whole idea of a thin plecky is that it’s designed NOT to snag. If I used one that didn’t bend the problem would be worsened.

@Friedrich Kugelschreiber - are you talking about a specific type? There appear to be a number of Jazz III models. There’s one called ‘Petrucci’ that look quite unique.

They all share the basic DNA, but the standard red nylon pick is what I was referring to. However, they are designed to be very stiff, which is ideal for single string work once your picking is precise enough. I think most everyone moves on to stiffer picks at some point; I don't know if you're there yet.

Probably not. I don’t think the pick is the problem at the moment.

You're right; probably not the pick.

Speed picking is not easy at all. It tires the hell out of me and it needs very solid technique not to fuck the tempo up. Try playing it 1/4 of the tempo first. If you can't just practice playing it by strumming each note once at the correct tempo. Then you can struggle upon figuring out the technique of seizure picking. :p

I think I have fairly good and instinctive timing when it comes to beat / tempo, but like you say the technique for speed picking is proving difficult for me.

Not just you. Don't be disheartened though. You'll get there, just don't get overly disappointed because I mean it, what you are trying to play is not beginner stuff. As for the pick, try different ones and see which works better for you. I prefer harder picks with sharp edges for fast picking, others might prefer softer ones. This is kinda subjective I think. Damn it! Where are my picks? I'm left with a crappy one again. Anyhow, sending a pm.
