Haven't blogged for a while...

  1. Holy hell!! Last time I blogged here was November 2007. Wow, brings me back - I was still in high school! Figured I'd wrote a post to clear my head.

So I've been enrolled in college since my last post here. I went to Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois on 2008. I eventually transferred to ISU for a year, changed my major from Marketing to Political Science, then transferred back to Bradley University last fall and finally changed my major to Entrepreneurship. The year at ISU cost me an extra year.

Writing-wise, I've stopped writing poetry and fiction and have moved mostly to non-fiction essays and song lyrics. I hope to further develop these areas of my writing to something that'll get published, but I also miss fiction and hope to get back to it in the near future.

Money's tight, but I can't complain. I've got big plans for the future, I just need to finish school and get some start-up capital. I've been into web development and internet marketing on and off. My problem is I take on too many projects, leaving even the ones I love to suffer (http://www.livefreeordie.com). This made me focus solely on WF, and I plan to continue to do so for the foreseeable future. :D

Upgrading WritingForums.org to Xenforo was well overdue, and I'm glad I finally made the transition. When we moved from vBulletin 3.8 to vBulletin 4.0 it was unhealthy for the site - we saw a drop in traffic, participation, posts, drops all around. I know that Xenforo will restore us back to where we were, and then some. I have big plans for the future of WF. I just need to learn to prioritize and stop focusing so much on the details. ;)

So glad it's almost the weekend. Ugh. it's 5:55 a.m.

Well, your energy and expertise makes me dizzy. Sounds like you're heading in the right direction, though, into a field which really DOES pay, once you get your foot in the door. I only hope you find the time to do some 'fun' writing along the way Mind you, I think you also have 'fun' running the forum, too. Don't you? Don't you????;)

Wow, Daniel, sounds like you're heading in the right direction. Do you think you can use this site to generate revenue? I mean, you have advertising and premium memberships, but I hope you may be able to find some more avenues to make the site profitable.

It really seems like micro-transactions are the way to go these days. I know if this site offered its members certain perks and charge .99 or 1.99 I would definately do it. I regularly spend that much on iTunes apps that I wind up deleting within a week anyways.

Anyways, it sounds like we have a capable leader at the helm and I'm looking forward to the future of WF.org!

@jarnnet, I think what I needs energy - or at least to focus on the short-term and now, I get too busy with everything! I consider the writing I do now fun :p (I love writing a persuasive, argumentative piece that's difficult to refute) But I miss the creative side. And ya, I definitely have a lot fun running the forum, lol, how'd ya know? I love making something expand and be the best it can be. I want to participate more though, I'm too focused on polishing the site and making it better. Balance, I guess!

@JJ_Maxx, thanks for the comment. WF could definitely be making more money than it is (I have some expansion plans), but it's difficult to get to that point without having more money to invest in custom development and advertising. Plus time is a factor. Right now we generate a little from Supporter Membership (not much) and some from the Google Adsense ads, but that's basically enough to cover our hosting bill.

Micro-transactions are an interesting idea. I'll definitely give some more thought to that... You're talking maybe things like custom user title, change username, change usercolor, forum perks like that? Any out-of-the-box ideas? hmmm...
