Hurricane Coming...

  1. Irene's coming. They say it's the worse one EVER for the area, but, well, that's the news for you. I guess by tonight I might eat my words...and some glass.

Strange though. Even though it's dangerous a part of me wants to see something epic. Of course, natures idea of epic might mean me walking barefoot around the puddle where my house used to stand. I'd have more concern for Florida, but friends down there say they've weathered storms like this in trailers. Encouraging spirit.

I fear the Florida snakes more than the weather. Shame how they have ruined that area by releasing all those boa constrictors into the Everglades. Maybe the storm will take care of that. But they'll just hunker down and tough it out I'm sure.

They released boa constrictors into the Everglades? On purpose? I wonder what could possibly be the reason behind it. Either way, I think snakes have less to fear from the storm than people. Our main concern is property and infrastructure.

They buy them at pet shops or illegally from poachers when the snakes are still small. But when they get too big to keep, instead of handing them over to a zoo as they are told to do, they go to the glades and let them loose. We now have two species of constrictors in Florida. The Burmese and the African.

Some suspect that even a few Anacondas have been released there as well. They keep popping up in people's back yards, appear suddenly out of the toilet bowl, attack indigenous wildlife. In fat even alligators aren't safe. They found a dead one with a gator inside. Seems a if another gator attacked her while she was trying to digest the one she had just swallowed. That's one reason I don't intend on moving to Florida any time soon.

That's crazy. Also makes me want to google 'African constrictor' :p Imagine if they became the reason alligators became extinct in the area. Or just one big turf war...
