If Time Travel Were Possible

  1. If time travel were possible at any point in our future, it has likely already been done and men have likely already traveled into our past. And because men are men, I would have expected space-time to be torn to rags as a result.

This argument has, in fact, been used to "prove" time travel is impossible.

Unless the initiation of time-travel creates a parallel universe which the travellers go into, thus independent of our own. Then when they've travelled and the space-time continuum stabilises, the old universe disappears and the parallel universe becomes the active one.

That's why I put quotes around the word "prove." There are several models of time travel that writers have come up with, with different consequences.

Even beyond writing, a single man can ruin space-time forever were it possible, but not for everyone. Think of it as a zipper, where the man altering time is the slider. All of time behind him cannot be altered, unless if he were to move back further. But ahead of him, an infinite possible paths that he can choose which one to travel down. Because we exist in a single point, all of time-space behind us and currently occurring is set in stone, because we lack the technology to move backwards. But if that man in the past chose a course (i.e. altered history) that would take him off-course of the present he had come from, then he, and only he, has dislodged himself from his original timeline. Because we haven't seen time-travel, only means that nobody has been smart enough (or subtle enough) to travel back in time without altering something.

That sounds a bit to much to swallow, the fact that a man can travel to an alternate time independent of the one he came from. Why? Because that would suggest that there were an infinite number of parallel universes. each second, each microsecond, each nanosecond has the possibility of being split into an infinite number of possible universes depending on the innumerable actions- major and microscopic- that can take place in each instant.

If time travel were possible then the person who does it will have changed time forever merely by appearing. Even if he sent only an atom back in time he has changed time forever. Maybe not to a noticeable extent in the beginning, but far down the line that atom may have changed something which changes everything. Well, I can't say I know that but I don't think time travel exists or will ever. But mainly because time doesn't exist as a "thing" to travel through...in my opinion.
