In the beginning: Baby steps

  1. So far I have completed one work, submitted one query, joined Writer's Market and this site. I am Contemplating the "readers Digest" Annual Competition. It is exciting and terrifying. I am using photography as my muse. Thank you Mrs. Clark for your fifth grade writing exercises. I also want to submit to a second agency and possibly join SCBWI. But enough procrastinating, I need to get back to work.

Oh? How does Writer's Market work? Is it just a forum?

I have not explored it as much as I would like, but I will share what I have learned so far. It has a "community," but the one on here is better, so far as I can tell. It does have agency lists by genre. The best thing so far is "My Markets," which aids tracking you can keep track of of manuscripts, submissions, and deadlines. I love that. When you sign up, there is an option to receive letters from readers digest about various things. Some are just silly- one was a "test" if you were a real writer. (Think really bad personality test on Facebook.) Others have been very useful, like notification of upcoming writing contests. I got a free years subscription when I purchased the 2012 Guide to Literary Agents. You can upgrade for very little, but I am not sure what the upgrade includes.
