Nanowrimo

By Corbyn · Oct 7, 2015 · ·
  1. The last two weeks have been jam packed with craziness for me. More so than usual. Finally this morning I had a moment to take a breath. It was in that breath I had an oh crap moment. It's October 7th, which means Nanowrimo is upon us.

In August I promised myself I would have all my little fuzzy yellow duckies in a row, and be ready for Nano. I am not.

Not only am I not ready, but I've realized my Mc is not ready. And of course all these realizations come at a week long work conference where I'm supposed to be soaking up valuable info to take back home with me.

My attention is divided, my characters are screaming at me.... What is a writer to do?

Is there anything I can do to help?

I'm hoping now that I'm home, my focus will be a little less divided. But I'm not holding out much hope yet. Thanks Wynn. How do you reign in your focus or balance life?

I have no social life. I also move slow and steady.

What do you like to write?

I also have no social life, but work seems to such up all my time and most of my energy.

I write fantasy, mostly urban lately.

Yeah. I know that feeling. I have been there.

In my experience, writing a 1,000 words only takes an hour or two. Even if you can't do it every day. The cool thing, is if you get 1,000 words a day, and managed that 2-3 days a week. 3k a week,12k a month. Before you know it you will have a book. I mean I guess it isn't much help for NaNo but if you are feeling bad about pace. I figured you might like thinking about how slow and steady can work. :)

Thanks, it's not so much the slow and steady that worries me though. I freaked because I realized how close Nano is, and I'm not sure my "plotting" I've done is going to get me through. I'm not sure my Mc is going to cut it, and I need to nip that in the bud before November 1st

Ah. In my experience there is always some details that are better to do suddenly as your writing. Let me give you an example.

In a book I did for Nano. I had a character that needed to go home for a family reunion. This being a plot point. I figured how to do that easy "Well, phone call is easy." I had that as my plan for a week. Because I hadn't actually got to the scene until a week. I sat down, fully prepared to type "Jackie's phone rang" when I realized that it was boring. So instead. "Jackie's playful, pranster ninja sister broke in to her apartment and was waiting for her to come home so she could esscort her to the reunion."

Now, out of context I am sure words "Jackie's playful prankster ninja sister" sound weird but it works and is many peoples favorite part of the book. Even if you plot for years. When you write, some little moments like that will happen. I say "go with it!" If you are concerned with an exact issue though, I would be more than willing to hear ya out in a private message. Feel free to send me one any time. :)

Thanks for the offer. I'll take you up on it. I'm probably just obsessing for no reason. Last year's Nano, I did finish, but in reviewing the piece later, it had a lot of major plot issues. I just want to weed out as many problems as I can before I start this year.
