    My nickname is Dasn, and you can call me Das. I'm a native Chinese speaker and of course living in China. I am also an English learner and love writing stuff in English. So please do point out the errors in my articles when you find anything that is not fluent, and I will really appreciate it.

    Hi Dasn,

    I can be a real stickler for proper English when I feel like it, so I won't hold back if you insist.

    Since we're talking language, can you explain for me the situation in China regarding Mandarin and Cantonese? My vague understanding is that the two languages are spoken in the same country, but I don't really know if one is more prevelant than the other, or if they are confined to different areas, or... well, or anything. I have no idea.

    Mandarin is commonly used in China mainland, and since it's the official language of China mainland, it is widely understandable by Chinese people in the world.

    Cantonese, in the way I understood, is a dialect of Chinese in Guangdong province of China. Since the prosperity of Hong Kong, Cantonese is also popular in Southeast Asia.

    Yes, as Cantonese is a dialect, it is confined to the south districts of China and southeast Asia, for example, I am from the north part of China and can only understand a little Cantonese, like some simple sentences in movies or pop songs. :)
