Should you boycott Ender's Game?

  1. I'm not taking a side on the issue..only sharing what's out there, but the LA. Times asks that very question today. Does the views of Orson Scott Card prevent you from seeing the movie? Were you going to see it anyway? I'll be curious to either hear the responses here or on the poll on my blog.

I think should is a word that implies rightness or wrongness in action. Boycotting the film (or not) is a personal choice that has to do with personal factors. I don't think should is a word that applies to the dynamic.

I have been in love with Ender's Game since reading it for the first time in junior year of high school. I also like watching movies based on books I've read so I can see the differences in interpretation of the characters. If I can find a sitter, I will definitely be seeing the movie and leave Orson's story at home so I may enjoy the magic of cinema at the movies. Not all movies based off books are going to follow the book(s) exactly, and not all movies based of books turn out bad, ie: Hunger Games, Interview With a Vampire, The Notebook, Forrest Gump, etc... Despite the horrifically, glaring lack of talent in the Twilight films, I still have hope that movies based on books aren't so bad, and because of my long-time love for Ender and the entire series, I just have to see it.

I just used the title of the article for the post. Personally I have no horse in this race. There are far more important things (like a financially bankrupt government that continues to spend like a drunken sailor at a whorehouse on pay day) than worry about gay marriage. On the other hand, as a person who values the first amendment I'd defend Card's right to speak his mind as much as I would someone on the other side of the issue.

Because if we Americans ever lose sight of the fact that free speech goes to both sides of the issue, then we're doomed to go down a long, dark road into places we do not want to go.

It was okay with me, but never struck me as something super special. I like Wilbur Smith's book 'Hungry as the Sea' more than 'Ender's game' and I'm a science fiction not. With that said, however, I hope it's a success since every other science fiction movie (outside of Star Trek-which is a rip off of the original II-III-IV movies) has bombed this year.
