Too many ideas

By Sam Cox · Mar 17, 2020 · ·
  1. It is a struggle sticking to writing one story. One story gives birth to another. When thinking of plot points, an entirely new plot develops and so on and so forth.

It is frustrating and leads to a whole lot of accidental procrastination. On the upside, it is creative.

I need to concentrate more. Maybe more coffee, or perhaps tea.

Don't get up for that coffee! Seriously, stay put, write that story in its entirety, skip lunch if you need to. Once you leave the room, you've abandoned your roll and it's pretty tough to recover.

We all have the same issue. There are many different disciplines of creative writing and to make a story work, we need to combine them.

Concentrate on short stories or flash fiction and in that way complete a story. Make sure that your stories have a beginning middle and an end. Make sure you finish your first draft. Make sure that your sentences show and tell. This last point is just as important creatively than plot points and general story ideas. Mastering these small details with creativity is the biggest challenge we all face.

Creativity is not just the whole story, but the chapters, paragraphs and sentences too.

These are some great ideas. Thanks guys. I've always found flash-fiction much easier to write so maybe best to take some ideas from that process.

Small details! That is definitely something I'm missing.
