I’ve been having a spot of fun with what seem like strange questions in the lounge these past couple of weeks. There is a purpose to these questions very much related to writing. I just wanted to give my reasons for why all these seemingly strange and non sequitur trains of thought and questioning.
1) Just to keep things lively and to keep the forum from devolving during the summer months into Post Your Puppy threads. This is a writing forum after all.
2) To get people thinking about their process, and give them the opportunity to see other peoples’ process.
What do I mean by process?
I mean the way that each of us, as individuals, comes to the ideas, choices, decisions, conclusions, feelings, and beliefs that we each come to. As individuals, those paths are unique to each of us. What does this have to do with writing? Everything! A good story is about the people in that story, and about how real, and unique, and approachable we as writers can make them.
In order to write real characters we have to get comfortable with the idea that there are as many ways of being as their are beings being.
That’s a pretty awesome thought, don’t you think?
There are as many ways of being as there are beings being.
That pretty much floors me.
Anyway…. Exploring other peoples’ process is part of my process. I realize that asking people their viewpoints is only going to evince emic data, with all of the drawbacks to that kind of data, but, hey… It’s something, right?
So, if you play along in my threads, remember, it's not the answer so much, but how you got to your answer that's really interesting. I've no axe to grind or point to prove. I'm a Pisces. I've little use for answers, but I'm hopelessly addicted to questions.
