WTF, America!? Seriously, WTF!?

  1. OK, this is going to be a difficult read for some, and hardly like the rest of the blogs I've done on this forum but...I need to get this off my chest.

In short, recent news (that I've seen from The Young Turks and Secular Talk, both talk shows on YouTube) have left me very pissed off at what's happening here in America. Unarmed black guys getting killed by cops, riots breaking out with cities like Charlotte being turned into pseudo-warzones with more innocent people getting hurt. This is, of course, ignoring the whole Trump/Hillary thing.

Just... What in the flying FUCK, America!? A part of me wonders if "united" means anything anymore. We're just one step away from killing each other all over again. United? Ha! From what I've seen, we're far from that. Some part of me wonders if, deep down, we were just looking for a reason to start killing/maiming each other...that we never truly, actually liked each other. Give me a few examples, if you please, to show that we genuinely give two shits about each other.

I feel ashamed to be American, ashamed to be in this country. I want to live somewhere else. Europe, specifically the UK but I don't have the finances to do that. I want to like my country, I want to believe that there are good things about America, that we Americans aren't just deranged animals looking for a reason to tear each other's throats out...but the news is making it very hard for me to see that.

So that's that. :/ I've completely lost faith in America and my own people.

What astounds me and upsets me is that we are the free-est, most free?, country in the world and we live in terror. Something wrong there.

The scene in Ok where the guy has his hands in the air & gets shot anyway - how bizarre is that? Fear.

I have my own feelings about 'faith' so I won't comment on that - it IS possible. :) But I know exactly what you mean. When was the last time you went to a theatre and felt completely safe?

i just feel like all this is just inciting tension and hate between all Americans. Aren't we supposed to be one people? Apparently we're not. Is it even possible to coexist together anymore? Maybe not. I don't know....

I don't know your skin color, but that doesn't matter. I still respect you as a human being. Why is this concept so difficult for us Americans to get??

You should probably not use the news to make you feel any type of way about who you are or where you come from. I've never really understood the self hating American thing to be honest. Now, fair point we have a lot of problems in this country. We can be very divided in almost every generation, we are very trigger happy at times, can be very arrogant, very unaware at times, we make some very questionable voting decisions and many man more problems. I won't defend these things.

These are our burdens to bare. I know that might sound bad, but they are. We aren't the first country to have a lot of problems though. So I hardly think you should let it effect your opinion of everyone who lives in the country. People do nice things every day, but as the saying goes 'if it bleeds it leads'

For good reason of course as these issues need awareness and need to be handled, but if you're watching or reading the news for good things you won't find much.

You said you wanted examples of people in this country doing good things?

    Here ya go.

    On another note.

You should never be ashamed of where you're from and poo on anyone who would make you feel that way. I firmly believe that all men deserve to be treated equal of course and no country is really better then than the other, but nothing wrong with a little HEALTHY patriotism. Nationalism, all that racist nonsense stuff and arrogant stuff is BS this is true, but nothing wrong with being proud of our accomplishments.

We can talk all day about Native peoples genocide, slavery and a lot of bad stuff. We've done a lot of terrible disgusting things that shouldn't ever be forgotten. I just don't think its fair to to start being a self hating cause of the bad stuff we did. We've got a lot to be proud or at least a lot of stuff that is decidedly badass. You see that big ball of cheese at night? We walked on that, we conquered the skies with giant mechanical birds (Well a guy from New Zeland kinda did first, but Wright Brothers influence on the plane cannot be denied), We are internet pioneers (I don't think we invented World Wide Web, I think that goes to UK. We did however create the ARPANET) and the list can go on and on about the things we've invented or helped invent.

Yeah we invented a lot of stuff because of war or competition with other countries. I still think its something to be proud of though in the long run and looking back.

I think the USA has the most patents out of every other country. I could be wrong of course....please correct me, I think we are up there though in the top three at least. That's something to be proud of. Also as with any country we've produced some very great artists, writers and all that. We've impacted the entire world in very positive ways with the things we've produced or been part of in this country (and negative ways to....very very bad ways to). So, don't forget the terrible things going on now or the terrible things that have happened long ago, and keep fighting to change them also don't forget all the cool and good stuff. :)

Agreed, the media only cares about ratings, not about their news, and they never show good things. The uptick with cop shootings is..... distressing. It seems like we've learned nothing, the po-po are shooting, people are rioting. Violence inspires violence, and that will never change.

I'm gonna do a necromantic ritual to bring MLK back. Anyone else in?

Know what's ironic? When I was little, I hated how people lumped all Americans as this band of violent, stupid people and now look at what I'm doing.

Good lord, I'm turning into the very thing I once hated.

But seriously, thanks everyone. =) I guess if you focus too much on the dark side of humanity, you find that little light in your heart becoming even more dimmer...

@cydney , I get these phases sometimes. Where I'm bitter and angry about something and it ruins my entire day. A few days later, though, I'm back to neutral again.

I do too. All the time. I understood/understand perfectly. The last thing you need is someone gettin' preachy with you. So I tried not to!

I really am glad you worked it out!

Same thing happens to me. No worries Link, none of us are perfect. Nowadays cops make me more nervous than ever, even though I know my chances of being shot by one are nigh zero

Do you ever catch yourself thinking "Humans stereotype each other too much, casting entire populations as the villains based on the crimes of the few instead of looking at everybody as individuals" before realizing that you're doing exactly the same thing?

    I know I do :(

Yeah I think that & try not to do it myself.

I was also just thinking how it irritates me when people judge my whole personality by one article I might write.

Sometimes we just need to 'write' thru moods, etc.

Just remember, American media makes things look worse than they are to generate ratings. Recently a white person was shot, and a lot of BLM activists protests his death as well. The media didn't report on it because it would show solidarity, instead of a divide.
