I have always refused to use single spaces after a period, even though it saves some space. Which can save a bit of money in paper. Some of my colleagues gleefully moved to single spaces, and even succeeded in changing our house rules on it. I'm still unsure whether my intransigence was based on my aesthetic sense or simple stubbornness, I can't say. Maybe having come of age in the era of typewriters, I'm just too old to change.
