I taught myself to write in grade school. The first writer to inspire me was R.L. Stein, then J.K. Rowling. I tried my hand at writing horror first and found out it was freaking hard.
Then I read a Stephen King quote off the back of a magazine: "The best to learn how to write is by reading. Just keep reading, and reading, and reading until you finally get it." And I followed his advice and began reading YA fiction because it was the closest thing to my age group that didn't bore me.
At the age of 12, I had my first piece of original fiction published by a bi-monthly childrens' magazine, and began writing fanfiction. Through fanfiction, I grew and learned as a writer. I figured what sounded good or bad, and how to determine where a paragraph started and ended.
Now, I am 25 years old in the middle of a divorce and moving back home with my mother, and have finally hammered out the plot details for the novel I've been attempting to write for the past six years.
