I have come to writing quite late in life and have been writing off and on (more off than on) for a couple of years. I started by writing an 80,000 word novel for which, surprise, surprise, I couldn't find a publisher. I am now focussing on short stories as a way of developing my skill as a writer. I have come to the conclusion that learning to write is like learning to play a musical instrument - it takes a great deal of practice! Short stories are a great way of trying different "exercises" and experimenting with different approaches.
