Was quite confused about why I couldn't figure out how to post a story. This cleared everything up :) And I'm very impressed with the 2 critiques rule. Well done and thanks.

Thanks for the excellent site and map! As to the location of the overwhelmingly most popular section... good idea to place it next to last, everyone's got to read through the other sections first. Maybe General should be Miscellaneous? (Do you really want to place your thread in that without proper reason?).

i would have said the exact oposite, personally, i would put general after all the specifics because thats where you should go if you cant find what you want anywhere else, like a miscellaneous tray

I never knew this page existed until someone told me on a thread in the general writing forum. it would have been nice to not have to create a pointless and short-lived thread because i was lost.

the human eye can only focus on one word at a time, whether or not theyre visible makes no odds if you dont read down to them. i would posit that its more to do with laziness than anything else

Well, checking the forum rules (and the forum layout, categories, etc.) is generally a good idea before posting. ;)
We also have a section named "New member introductions" and everyone who creates a thread there will get a link to this page (though you would have to see that section first, of course).

NaNoWriMo is a name for an event (the National Novel Writing Month), but I do agree it does sound confusing at first. I didn't have a clue what it was until I strolled over to Google. :)

While we might only be able to focus on one word (if that is true, I don't know), that does not mean you can't see more than one word.

didn't see that, saw the debate room and got distracted...

I have never heard of that, it sounds to me more like something to do with manga fan-fics or something.

when i say focus i mean read. that said, the words directly in front behind above and below are registered to a great enough degree that should they change, we would notice.

, i'm a veritable font of useless trivia. its a completely useless skill, save for accidentally getting into arguments with strangers.

Posting does mean answering in a thread... is that what you meant?

Yes, that´s what I meant. But in this case, I have made more than 20 posts, but I still can´t post stories. What could be wrong?

Sometimes the system gets a hiccup and things don't work as expected. Send a PM to Wrey and he should be able to help you.

I like the color code system, except my laptop turns Burgundy black, depending on the angle of the screen (or that of my eyes from the screen). And Orange turns red. Actually, I do see all the colors, but during a narrow position of eye-to-screen on this laptop. Finally, Red and Blue are easiest to see, having a larger window of correct color visibility.

Honestly, I do not care. I just saw this and thought I'd share.
Oh, and I read the rules, first thing-- after creating this account.
This is my second time reading them. :) I don't understand the "/parse" part. But I get the rest. Thanks for explaining. ~#A

EDIT: I see that I only read the rules once. To clarify, I've read this list twice. Thanks.

The part about 'noparse' and 'plain' essentially means this: Certain 'codes', like will format your post (in this case the text between the tags will be bold), and the tags themselves are hidden. If you want to write the code without the forum 'parsing'/hiding it (i.e. turning it into formatting) you must add [plain][/plain] tags around it when you write your post, like so: [plain]non-formatted text[/plain]. The 'plain' tags tells the forum to write everything between them as normal text.

Now, I don't really know why you would need this (since there are buttons for all possible formatting there one rarely needs to explain how to write bbcodes), but there you go. :)

There's one rule that I'm confused about, regarding posting on one's blog. I have a blog on Blogspot where I've been posting some of the things I've written, mainly short essays on things that strike my fancy. It's a not-for-profit thing, so I have no financial interest in getting readership.
I've posted sections of two of my short stories in the Writer's Workshop section. I would have rather posted the whole story, since readers have evidently not been able to follow the story arc and see where it's going. However, I've gone with not exceeding the maximum allowable word count.
Is it permissible to post a link from my critique requests to the story or essay that's posted on my blog, to give the reader the option of seeing the whole thing if he or she wants?

Links are definitely a no-no in the Workshop. I'm a confused as to the "maximum allowable word count" you mention. We don't have a rule concerning the max apart from the limit the software allows, which is at least over 15k words, to my knowledge.

@JLT, if there's a section you want critiqued, can you not give a synopsis of what the critics need to know about the scene?

And now I'm confused. I thought that posting sections much longer than 1500 words was discouraged. The story in question was about 3200 words, and I split it in two to conform to what I thought were the rules.
