    Writing to a film

Discussion in 'Scripts and screenplays' started by Fizzedine, Jul 3, 2015.

    Hey guys

I was curious to know if you have tried writing a literary piece based on a film, for example, a novelisation of a film.

I was thinking to do it as an exercise in seeing if I can do a substantial writing project?

Is this worth doing or a waste of time?

    Cheers guys

It would essentially be a form of fanfiction, right? Which isn't a bad place to get your start writing, as far as I'm concerned, but this seems like it wouldn't be a project that would teach you much more than wordsmithing. Like, you wouldn't be developing your skills of structure or characterization or anything.

Why are you interested in doing it?

Basically I am guilty of not writing on a regular basis and I am also having a drought of ideas. I feel like this would motivate me to overcome both blocks?

    Thanks for writing back :)

I have been thinking about this for a while. A while back, I wanted to try and make a film-to-book adaptation of Gus Van Sant's Good Will Hunting, just to see what would happen. I didn't. But recently I found out that one of his other movies, Finding Forrester, was actually adapted into a novel, not the other way around. And from what I've heard, seen, and read, it wasn't half-bad either.

This sounds like an exercise I once had to do in film school. We were given a scene from a movie and asked to re-write it in script form. It was useful for learning what should be put into a script, what shouldn't, and the level of detail one should add.

I could see this exercise being just helpful for writing novels. You don't have to worry about imagining anything, you just have to find a way to paint the scene with words. That could be very useful as a tool for simply practicing better wordsmithing.
