No, maybe that last sentence was confusing, I mean, I have both male and female Main Characters and write both POVs but, in my opinion, I write better, from a male point of view. Which surprised me.
I'm a gay guy, and as such, I don't hang around with women or girls much. So I've convinced myself that I don't know them very well, and I don't feel comfortable writing about them as MCs. So all my main characters are male. Young, old, straight, gay, it doesn't matter. I feel like I understand men and boys better than I do women and girls, so I write about males.
I like writing pieces that are the same gender, but I will go a long time in a piece without saying his name. I recently wrote a piece that he only game his name once and that was because I had to do it.
I write both, but find my female characters to be more interesting. Perhaps I have a better idea of what I like in women than men so it is easier to create my 'ideal'--but with enough unique flaws to make her interesting.
Quite the opposite. I don't care a whit about fashion. I wear jeans and T-shirts, usually. In colder weather, I wear flannels from LL Bean. Fashion doesn't enter into it.
I live in LA county, not in the city. I can't stand LA. I will be moving within the next year, I think. Heading further north, where they don't care about fashion.
I'm fine with either gender. I don't have a particular reason for which one I choose, as gender never seems to be something that I really think about in my stories.
I think you might have hit the nail on the head, with this subject. Although there will always be exceptions, I wonder if people who find it easier to write 'the other gender' are finding it easier because they are actually attracted to that other gender. So they build a character they would like to be with, rather than one they would like to be. I suspect that might be the case, certainly with me. I have created a main male POV character ...and two minor ones ...in my novel. And only one female. She is a major character, but she is the only female POV. My challenge will be to write the POV of different older characters (one male and one female), rather than the youngish adult mode which I've written in thus far. I have experience being older—I'm 66 at the moment—but I've never written the POV of an older character. We'll see how that goes.
I prefer sausage. Usually my MCs have one, although I do tend to write at least one point of view character with a taco. I don't know, but men are more interesting to me. In the end, the sex doesn't matter that much, but I think in general I prefer writing men/boys.
Dude. There is an entire culture in LA that does not care about fashion (you're thinking of NYC, ugh) just as there are plenty of gay men not interested in being Grace's best friend (again you're thinking of NY).
I tend to write male MC's into my stories. I think it's because on a subconscious level, I worry about writing myself into the story. So in an attempt to disconnect from the MC, I have a tendency to make him male. Plus, even though I'm a woman, I find that I have an easier time connecting with men. With other women, I'm usually on guard, but I feel I can be myself more easily around guys for some reason.
Most off MCs are female. I do have a few ideas with male MCs but... Chances are I'll change them to female. To make things order they also tend to be either lesbian or bisexual. Fun. I tend to enjoy reading about FMCs more then I do male characters. I honestly don't know why so I guess I'm just writing what I enjoy.
I tend to just write what ever my subconscious tells me so most of the time it is wanting females. Though it has got me thinking it would be fun to write more male leading characters.
