Hello there. My name is Joseph Avila, I'm 22 and I'm a writer from Indio, CA. I'm a little bit more than ten weeks away from receiving my B.A.s in English and Creative Writing from the University of California - Riverside. I was raised devoutly evangelical christian but as I got older I decided to reorient my pursuits. I identify as Chicano and have roots that extend into Mexico, the Philippines, France, Ireland, and Spain. I usually write fiction, specifically magical realism but have put considerable effort into non-fiction this past year. Topics I usually like to play around with include: race/ethnicity, Mexican-American folklore, drugs, history, time, religion, culture, media, conspiracy theories, education, politics, colonialism, postmodernism, spirituality. I look forward to interacting with you all and hearing your stories.

Thank you so much for the welcome I wish I would've read the deadline for voting. It sounds like an amazing idea. When will the next competition be? What're your favorite things to do around here?
You still have 35 minutes to vote. If you need a little longer and you are going to vote now, I can extend it a few minutes. Right now there is a tie so we need one more vote.

OK, voting extended another 7 and a half hours. There was a tie for first place, so I didn't take a win away from anyone to do it.
