    Your favorite character

Discussion in 'Character Development' started by Krea, Apr 20, 2016.

Not one that you've watched or read; one that you've invented. Who's your brain baby? And what're they like? Why are they your favorite? Do you think they're your best character? Why or why not?

The character who grew on me most was Billy Sanford, a fifteen-year-old magical researcher I based on my childhood friend. He's very knowledgeable about his subject of study, and seemingly very naive about everything else, but there's a core of sincerity to him that carries him through situations he really shouldn't be able to handle. I loved to let him exposit and act like an authority, then drop a reminder that he's just an over-educated rich kid. Plus it was fun to find ways to make him seem long-winded while actually having his speech take very little time to read.

(In one way or another, I always wind up liking characters based on that friend. She shows up a lot in my stories in all sorts of different guises, and there are a lot of characters I would never have been able to write if I hadn't known her.)

The main character of my WIP is my favourite. She's the first one I've created that has a strong 'voice' and it's made her a lot of fun to write. She's also the total opposite to me - really extroverted, confident, optimistic, vain, fearless. I'd love to have a drink with her in real life and I would really love for her to be my friend: once she's got your back she's really got your back.

I've also got a soft spot for the hero of my first novel. He's very selfless and the kind of guy I'd want to have my back in a crisis.

So I guess I like loyal characters who'd do anything for their friends. :D

My wife loves The Walking Dead, Resident Evil... and just the zombie apocalypse idea in general so I created an endless project where our family is plunged into that world.

My favorite character I've created is the fictionalized version of myself, a product of the brutal new world. I started like a regular guy trying to do what's right, then evolve as we're attacked time and time again into a partially unhinged warlord.

Without a doubt, the biggest character in this little universe I created.
One - Strange clone, criminal, business owner and eventually a politician. No matter what I say can't do him justice as I just adore the way he changed over the years. From the humble role he had in a short story to the biggest gear in most of my plots regardless of whether he's even a notable character in the story.

I loved tormenting him and actually felt happy when I gave him peace in the end.

Corlixia/Mother Confessor has to be my fav. character to write. Over analytical, takes things at times to the literal, and fails to grasp the concept of making proper metaphors.:D Also has deep thoughts about what she has done in the past. A little socially awkward at times, and a happy drunk (though she doesn't drink often). The one thing that really gets her pissed is calling her a bitch. She makes her point of disliking the vulgar label quite clear to those that are dumb enough to call her a bitch. Though as of late she has become a hardened soldier and war-frame pilot that is now the rank of Corporal, and has a nasty cut on her face from a Merc. She employs Marckus's philosophy toward Mercenaries: I love Mercenaries, cause no matter what you do to them you don't feel bad.

Zlada Volkov/Red Wolf has to be a close second. As a major secondary character she is just an epic bad-ass. Takes quite a bit to get her riled up, or upset. Cool as a cucumber fresh out the freezer while commanding a massive space offensive, showing no fear. Though she is particularly scary when she is pissed off. She got captured and raped, and she managed to get free and beat her rapist to death. She has a short dry humor, and is tough as nails. As a sniper she is exceptional, and can hit whatever she marks as a target.

I just love my girls, though Zlada scares me with just how OP she is. And Corlixia is just a can of interesting worms, with her oddity and complexity. :p

It's basically this guy who has nothing going for him, and then he accidentally kills a guy. He is then stalked by someone who witnessed the murder and is constantly blackmailed and stalked. His wife then leaves him and he is forced into a small apartment with only one chair. He then tries to commit suicide, but the rope snaps and he breaks his only chair. So now he can't even kill himself.

    Yeah. It's pretty bleak.

I can't chose. Usually my favourite is the one I'm currently writing about.

Usually with my ideas, it's the unhappiest characters who get the happiest ending. Because I feel like they deserve them. And I feel like I can get away with giving characters bad endings more if they weren't having all that bad before. This is usually though.

I'm loving Xandiel right now, and he's from the thing I'm actually trying to legit write, so yeah. But I have loads of other characters that I love, and I like all my characters to a substantial degree because if I don't I change them.

If we are including other things than strictly books, then my favorite character, and my longest running character in role playing, was a gnome rogue, Loxley, who started out as a guy breaking away from the norms of his kind to experience adventure but without a profession he had to steal when neccesary, who over the course of the several years that the game ran was corrupted by his own greed. Among several of his misdeeds were my favorite, when our group founded it's own kingdom, Loxley talked his way into becoming the minister of finances, a position he abused to fund the theives guild whose members only knew him as Shadow.

I don't play characters like that any more, but he remains one of my most treasured characters.
I should add that he remains one of my most treasured characters, not because he was evil, but because he was still "human" (gnome) enough to feel the perpetual guilt of knowing who he had become, and why.

Well, most characters in my works end up not surviving whatever comes in the end.
I feel like the death of a character has a much stronger effect on the reader than survival. Yes, there's characters who get the happy ending and it has an impact but I simply believe characters are easier to sympathize with through tough situations.

My favorite character is Peer Karlsson, a Swedish punk vocalist. He's blonde but dyes his hair black - for the scene. I guess he's my favorite because he's my very first original character (had him in my head since 2012) and the one who resembles myself the most (not counting my self-inserts :D lol). Peer is angry at the world all the time and takes it out on innocent and not-so-innocent bystanders, but you can't say he's unhappy; he's actually quite cheerful in his own sardonic way. Oh, and he's gay.

I guess I can say with all confidence that Peer is my best character. He's one of those characters that are easier to write, and I've been developing him for so long he already has his own voice and all.

Does he have a boyfriend/husband? If so, what is he like?

He falls for someone in the course of the story (that's the whole plot). That someone is the total opposite of Peer: well-adjusted, happy in a more conventional way, still in the closet, rarely gets mad, naive, etc. I'm still deciding whether I'm gonna give those two a happy ending or not :p

    Matty.

Don't worry, it's just I rarely discuss my WIPs. I wish I can get this thing finished asap so it feels more like a proper story instead of just 'ideas'.

This is a hard one. Besides my MC of course it would be a toss about between to the female teens in the book but i will go with Laurel being my fav. she's learned a lot of about, shes independent, shes a bad ass and she's loves books.
