    american insults/ derogatory names for gay people

    Discussion in 'Research' started by big soft moose, Mar 24, 2017.

    Quick question for the Americans among us. If you were a ignorant redneck neo nazi type biker (in Georgia if it matters) how would you describe gays ?... I'm British so i suspect that a lot of the UK insults like Arse bandit and fudge packer might not be appropriate

    I guess fag or faggot is pretty universal, but I'd like a bit more local color if i can...

    (note : no offence intended to our Gay or otherwise LGBTQ members - these are casual antagonists and will shortly be getting their bigotted arses kicked by the MC , but i'd like them to be realistic assholes for the short period in which they are capable of speech )

    Yeah, fag or faggot. Honestly I can't remember the last time I heard a gay slur anywhere. If you want the Italian slang it's "fanook," which people back home still use, but most of them are so old they're still prejudiced against women who work.

    Modern? And in what age group is the bigot? M?ale or female target.

    Am I stalling? Yes. I don't like that kind of talk. But you probably shouild be more specific when asking.

    Nah, boring truth is that fag or faggot is pretty much the standard 'round these parts. I mean, you might trick it up with accessory syntax like queer-ass faggot, etc. but that's about it unless, like @Homer Potvin mentions, the people in question would be making use of terms pulled from other cultures like fanook, maricón, etc.

    ETA: Ass bandit and fudge packer would be perfectly understood here, but to an American they sound like they belong to the family of pretend curse words like shoot, and dangit. They don't carry the same punch as the real words.

    And "waco," (spelling?) which the Guatemalans I worked with used to use. Everything was waco this and waco that. Non stop. All day. I really don't hear gay slurs much anymore. Ethnic slurs all the time, but the gay ones seemed to have slipped out of favor, maybe? I have absolutely nothing to back that up, but I also live in an area with a lot of gay couples, so maybe people are just better at checking themselves now than they used to be.

    Never heard that one before. Older latinos where I live will sometimes use the word bugerón. I'm sure you can see the cognate to buggery. But it's got a more specific meaning than is currently in use. Bugerón is a slur for a gay guy who only tops. In this dynamic, the bugerón is the top, the maricón is the bottom. But you hardly hear that word anymore, having been pretty much completely replaced by maricón for all occasions.

    Interesting. I could usually tell which Latin American country I person was from by the slang they used. Years in restaurants have taught me more Spanish than high school ever could. I don't know if you could apply it @big soft moose, but Americans still you the terms "pitcher" and "catcher" in a gay context, like Wrey was saying about top and bottom. Somebody will say something like "I used to be a pitcher in high school" and someone else will inevitably add, "And now you're the catcher!" Older terms like fudge packer and pillow biter are so archaic now that I think you might have to explain them to the kids.

    I've only ever had people call me a faggot, haha. It's pretty darn common here in the states.

    Allow this Southern Yankee to help ya. Here's what I've observed...

    -> Faggot/fag
    -> Sinner (if the bigoted was deeply religious)
    -> Boy Rapist (it's a nasty stereotype among homophobics that gay people often rape children)
    -> Sissy/pussy
    -> Freak

    Source: I grew up and still live in the Deep South.

    DISCLAIMER: I too wish to make it clear that I mean no offense to our LBGTQ+ members here. I'm simply answering Moose's question.

    Which is like being from the moon compared to New England where I'm from. And New Hampshire is its own parallel universe. Depending on where you go in the US, you will get all sorts of disparate attitudes and slang.

    Hey I don't like it either - but shit happens ... I'm certainly not portraying it as desirable - the bigot would be mid twenties and referring to a gay couple, as in "hey, you looking for those faggots in 4B , they don't live here no more, we ran their baby raping asses out of here"

    which works fine , but if they then get into a "you a fag too, huh, you want what they got.." type scenario right before it gets physical and all the bigots go for a fun day trip to A&E I don't really want to be using the same insult over and over again

    regionally speaking this is taking place in Georgia, although some of the later action takes place across the 'bama line

    People still use cocksucker up here (Canada) sometimes - that not used in the south?

    We've got a strange dynamic, at least in the younger generation, where we've trained the kids to not use homophobic language about gay people but they still use the insults for other purposes. Like, I've actually seen a straight teen call another straight teen a cocksucking faggot, and when a gay kid stepped in and said watch what you're saying, the first kid was totally amazed--I wasn't talking to you! I'd never call you that!

    The struggle continues...

    The words get divorced from their original meanings so easily. I saw a gay friend of mine explain with impressive patience to someone else that using 'gay' as a synonym for 'bad' was still kinda hurtful, even if he didn't think being gay in itself was bad and was just treating it as a different meaning for the word, like 'gay' used to be used for 'happy' or 'joyful'.

    HOMOPHOBIC IN DRAFT

    'God damn fairies shoving their cock-sucking talk down my throat is offensive,' said Pfc Georgia Pete to the Minister.

    He saluted, and stood ramrod stiff, veiny here on the parade ground. A parade ground in sand. Just him and the religious official. It was kind of surrealistic, a wide blue sky, some snakes about and slithering, and two men naked mostly. Pete wore the suggestive thong, maybe there was a fat banana under his belly? I guess so, and also he wore the flip-flops, and raybans wrapped under a Confederacy bandana. He was lotioned, glistening. Two nice nipples, like two tomatoes were flattened on his chest. You like a flat tomato?

    Facing him, the Minister's cassock a flapped mysteriously as cassocks do in wind, he was only wearing a cassock, you catch my drift, and his eyes shone with a flaming fag lust, fag lust for things fag. He fumbled under this cassock. Georgia Pete recognised this fumbling, maybe the minister was a mechanic? He continued @ $2.50 per minute.

    'I say sir, one day, sir, we're gonna take all the faggots, them phonies, them liberals, load them into B-82s, bomb Amsterdam with their pink bodies. What you think of my plan?'

    'Maybe we stand underneath, catch them as they fall?' said the Minister.

    'I never thought of that,' said Pete.

    Peter-puffer is out of vogue? I've been gone too long to keep up on my insults, especially the ones I'm not interested in using.

    We need more bigoted people on this forum.

    Anyway @Moose, you better write a decent Afghan book. There's a lot of porno out there, shiny cover with a gun, inside:

    Chapter 1

    Zoomph, woomph .

    Holy shit, two rounds whistled past my head, impacted in the soft top.

    Fuck, bollocks, we gotta get out of here or we’re dead meat.

    ...

    s'pose it's like True Crime genre, room for everyone.

    Here's the thing, though: As infamous as we may be here for the insouciant use of such slurs, on the whole, Americans really aren't terribly creative as regards the battery of words we use in this kind of discourse. The slurs I remember as a child in the 70's are the slurs that are still used today. Given that Moose mentions the character in question to be "ignorant redneck neo nazi type biker (in Georgia if it matters)", I'm not really picturing someone who is going to wax rhapsodic as regards his proclamations. I'm guessing he's going to reach for some pretty basic, tried and true, heavy hitting blunt instruments. Lots of F-bombs in assorted forms to ratchet-up (as we say) the level of impact. I could see cock-sucker getting used, though. Yes, that one's got some punch to it.

    I certainly remember hearing cocksucker used a lot when I was still in the USA 30 years ago. But oddly enough, it didn't mean what it means, if you know what I mean. It was interchangeably used with 'cunt,' and to mean more or less the same thing. A bad male person. Nothing to do with being gay.

    Agreed. That term underwent a strong cleaving away from its original meaning. And I agree that it has a strong parallelism with the use of the word cunt in the UK, though, if media is any measure, the American version does not enjoy the same liberal usage.

    What was the original meaning of 'cock-sucker?'

    Well, the original meaning would seem clear. He who gets on his knees to fellate his fellow man. But, semantic shift being what it is, what remains of the meaning is the scorn applied to said act, not the act itself anymore, in any literal sense.

    Important to remember that the first anglophone Americans where merely expat Brits. ;)

    Just as "you can suck my cock" generally means "fuck off" rather than being an invitation to perform fellatio. (depending on context of course ;) )
