    Camp NaNo (April 2017)

Discussion in 'NaNoWriMo' started by A.S.Ford, Mar 21, 2017.

    Hey everyone,

@Analytical_Fangirl and myself have created a cabin for this year's April Camp NaNo and we are extending an invitation to join our cabin to anyone who would like to do so :)

Just comment below or message me so we can send you an invitation on Camp NaNo - don't forget you will need to have created/set up a writing project on the site before we will be able to add you to the cabin.

Good luck to everyone attempting the challenge next month!

    You're welcome :)

What project will you be working on? I understand if you would rather not discuss it.

I shall be working on expanding my undergraduate dissertation which is a novel set in an alternative history where the Black Death plague in the UK caused an apocalypse, in the sense of a devastated world. My protagonist is the handmaiden to one of the daughters of a Lord, who she is currently travelling with. It's a slow work-in-progress but hoping to make a decent dent in the word count by the end of the year :)

    That sounds really interesting!

I currently have a novel out on Kindle, the first of a series. It follows 19 year olds who are conscripted into a galactic army. It explores how they are affected by being taken away from their families, and how they learn to work together in squads, putting their lives into the hands of strangers. I'm currently editing the second book in the series, and will be writing the third book for my Camp NaNo project.

    Thank you :)

Your series sounds really intriguing as well. I love the psychological side/exploration of characters and of human nature and sci-fi/fantasy genres are really wonderful.

Good luck with your editing and with writing the third book this April!

Why should we join your cabin? You aren't really giving a reason.

Er... Forum pride? Solidarity? Because we don't want to end up in a cabin where 90% of people will give up after day two?

i am not sure i really grok how the cabins work for nano
after looking at their site , for the first time, i am more confused than before about how nano works

i used to think folks just wrote their fingers to the bone in a month
but the nanowrimo.org site indicates there is a lot more formal structure than i had imagined
unfortunately the site did not explain it clearly to me

what is the significance of being in the same cabin ??

well thanks to wikipedia i see this to understand the camp nanowrimo

    Camp NaNoWriMo[edit]
A summer version of NaNoWriMo, called Camp NaNoWriMo, launched in 2011. Two sessions were held, one in July and one in August; however, the months were switched to June and August for Camp NaNoWriMo 2012. The two months were then switched to April and July for 2013 and 2014. The rules used for the main event in November also applied to each Camp NaNoWriMo session.[34] The Camp NaNoWriMo website does not have forums, but participants may choose to join a group of up to 11 writers, called a cabin.[35][36] Each cabin has its own message board, visible only by members of that cabin. Camp NaNoWriMo participants may also choose their word count goal, similar to the Young Writers Program.[37]

Hey :) so, yeah, Camp NaNo is a side project to NaNoWriMo, which is a writing challenge that lasts from the 1st November to 30th November every year and all its participants aim to write 50,000 words (the average length of a novel) in order to 'win' the challenge. Although the Camp NaNos (which are held every April and July of each year) are based on the NaNoWriMo challenge, they are slightly different. With NaNoWriMo (in November) it is mostly a solitary task though you can find 'writing buddies' whereas with the Camps you can be part of these virtual/online 'cabins' which are basically a group of 10 - 11 other writers doing the challenge alongside you for support and, if it works for you, competition. Another difference is that with the November NaNo everyone has the set word count of 50,000 words, whereas with the Camps you can choose whatever word count goal you would like regardless of whether that would be 1,000 or 100,000 words. The final difference is that with the November NaNo participants generally write novels since the word count goal is the average length of a novel and NaNoWriMo even stands for 'National Novel Writing Month', however the Camps are more flexible regarding the genre of your projects and you are free to choose to write a novel, poetry, short story collection, essay collection, school/college/university assignments, etc.

Those are really the only three differences however as the length of the competition is still one month so this April Camp will run from 1st April to 30th April and you will just need to reach the word count goal you set yourself in order to 'win'. It is really up to how your writing process works and which would be better suited for you. If you prefer some writerly support from like minded people and the freedom to choose your word count goal then I would recommend Camp NaNo's writing challenge style, otherwise if you prefer solitude and to attempt to write an entire novel in a month then NaNoWriMo would probably be better.

    I hope this helps :)
