"So, how you likin' your fruits and stuff?"

Drake blinked. Wow, he was way too preoccupied with his new Fridge spell and again, he seemed to have zoned off. And now apparently, Trisana was sitting next to him. Close to him. Very close to him. Now that he hadn't expected. He wanted to say something cool and edgy, sweep the girl off her feet. Instead, he dribbled on his chin. Yeah, so classy. Hastily, he wiped it away.

"Um, yeah, it's not bad actually. Say, what do you know about alternate dimentions."

    Andreas

Just like when he had intervened with Nyx's assailant outside the Wall, Andreas felt a surge of relief when Joe stepped forward and was healed. He had half-expected Joe to put some sort of foot down and insist Andreas go first. After his unusually active behaviour recently, it wasn't beyond imagination. In fact he was so relieved that he forgot to ask for healing himself. Soon he was biting into giant segments of orange and getting juice all down his chest. It looked like Alex and Drake weren't doing much better so that was ok.

Levity. He had a chance to learn an awesome new spell and he'd gone with the magic version of 'chill man, you want some weed?' Now that he thought of it, Trisana had plenty of levity. He couldn't help but wonder if the spell would have any effect on her. Unless there was more to it than met the eye.

The fungal smell of their seats put him off a bit. Sort of a cross between normal mushrooms and that weird, other-wordly fungal smell you get in a dank autumn woods. His exhausted mind wandered, flitting from Derrek's face to the confrontation to severred moss body parts. It dimly dawned on him that they were going on this big, important quest. It was really cool, like, really really cool. But so far it hadn't been all fanfares and kilts fluttering in the wind. The world was still real, and ugly, and bloody - if he was going to give his all to getting them through this, he had to stop being so sensitive. There was plenty of death on the way, he could feel it. Time to man up.

He felt stupidly tired. There was no way he could stand if he tried. What's more, it took a great effort to bend the elbow on his wounded side and his shoulder had started to itch horribly.
"Actually, Sulla ma'am, you don't have a minute to sort my shoulder out, do you? I, uh, forgot to mention it."

    Samara

Samara kept quiet during the explanations. She had already made up her mind that she would find a way to save the moss women from extinction. She just didn't know how -- and that's why she kept her mouth shut, rather than make more promises she can't keep. While the fruit was being passed around, she sat at the table, looking rather regal, but inside the gears were turning in her head. Sacred water... there had to be more of it someplace... or a way to make more of it.

If the damned Darkness keeps coming back, why can't something sacred or good come back, too? she thought. Surely, evil can't be the only thing that is timeless.

While all of this was running through her mind, she kept her hands busy, fashioning trinkets out of the same magical crystal she used to make armor. In theory, she could make nearly any shape, but her body and mind were trained to make armor. That is what came naturally; that is what she had honed herself to do. But still, when Alex sat down next to her, she was thoughtfully turning a small crystal cube between her fingers.

"So basically we're going to save the world?" Alex asked.

Samara peered at him over her bare shoulder. She hadn't even realized he was there... right next to her... with strawberry juice dripping down his chin. She glanced down at the plate of fruit in front of her: pomegranate, half of a giant orange, and a grapefruit. Food that would give her energy. Meat would be better, but this would do.

"Awesome," he said, with seeds in his teeth.

She concentrated hard and the cube began to take shape, transforming into a knife. It was dull and crude, but good enough to slice her fruit into smaller pieces, so she wouldn't make a mess. There was nothing 'awesome' about being covered in slime. If she had a handkerchief, she would offer it to him. Those damned etiquette classes were catching up with her.

"My father once told me 'the world is people,'" she said as she expertly carved up the contents of her plate, as if this were a fancy dinner party. Most people knew she was adopted into a wealthy family, though she rarely showed it. "'Don't try to save the world. That's arrogant,' he said. 'Just save the people. One person at a time.'" She slowly shook her head. "I never paid him much mind. Who is he to lecture me? He claims to be descended from a line of legendary defenders, but what does he do now? He runs some big ass company, like magic is dead. And don't even get me started on my sister. All that potential, and what does she do? Goes off to school to get her MBA, to be just like ol' dad." She laughed and didn't even realize she was turning the grapefruit into a smoothie. "Who the hell are they saving? Me? Ha, I didn't ask to be brought here. But now that I am, I'm going to save the world. Fuck the people; they're the ones who broke it in the first place. Darkness Incarnate is a person. Vetala's a person." She stabbed a piece of orange and popped it into her mouth. "Other than that, yeah, everything's awesome."

    Trisana

"Say, what do you know about alternate dimensions?"

Trisana blinked and swayed on her mushroom stool. Did he just ask me about...alternate dimensions? He sure has a funny way of flirting. Alright, let's see if I can trick him into thinking I'm smart. "Alternate dimensions?" Trisana repeated, buying time. "Weeelll, I know a lot about those things. What's not to like about 'em? Let's see...there's supposed to be a lot of 'em, that's for sure. Some of 'em are real dangerous, you know, with monsters and stuff. But that's not much different than the Old Kingdom, is it? Heh heh. And I s'pose there's an Evil Trisana and an Evil Drake in one of 'em, too..." She trailed off, thinking about what Evil Trisana looked like; she envisioned jet-black hair and goth-y outfits.

"Eh hem, anywaysss," Trisana said, snapping back to reality. She placed her hand on Drake's chest and tried to smile seductively, but she just came across as drunk. "Wouldn't you rather want to talk about us? As in you and I?" She waggled her eyebrows suggestively and then yawned so powerfully they she almost fell off her mushroom.

Sulla healed Andreas the same way she had with Joe, placing her hands on the injured area and making moss grow over it. When the moss crumbled away, all his aches and pains were gone. "There you go," she said, tweaking his nose. "All better."

Alex cocked his head to the side while Samara spoke, listening intently. When she finished, he hesitantly touched her shoulder. "We'll get through this, you know that right?" he said. "I'll make sure of it."

Nora was working her way through another grape when she noticed how Trisana was acting weird...well, weirder than usual. She swallowed her food and was about to ask if she was alright, when a bloodcurdling howl filled the night. It was joined by a dozen more howls until it sounded like a chorus of tormented souls, and then all at once...the howling stopped. Nora was on her feet in an instant, her hands glowing with cold blue light. "It's the werewolves," she announced, eyes trained on the entrance to the hollowed tree.

Sulla was already standing. She pressed her hands together and pulled them apart, and a long, vine-like whip stretched out in between. "Let them come," she said in a low, fierce whisper. She expertly twirled the whip over her head and brought it down with a resounding crack on the ground.

"I'm not scared of some mangy mutts," Alex declared. He stood and marched straight to the moss curtain before anyone could stop him, pulling it wide open. "They will pay for what they've done."

    "Alex, no!" Nora screamed.

But it was too late. Alex stepped out into the clearing and faced down a whole pack of werewolves. They stood thirty feet away in a straight line, like trained soldiers. There were twelve of them in total. Half were in full wolf shape, as big and muscly as horses. The other half looked more like man-wolf hybrids, standing on two feet with clawed fingers and snarling wolf heads. A thirteenth wolf stood behind the line: it was bigger than others, and instead of having brown or grey fur like the rest, its pelt was pure black.

"Kill them all," the black wolf said in a grating, bestial voice.

All the wolves charged forward and Alex screamed and ran toward them.

Joe had taken the chance to go through their bag as they all sat down to eat. What had been a battered backpack patched with duct tape had become dark, long, and flat enough to fit under their cloak without bulging. Clever slits on either side meant they could reach around and inside with it still on their back. It was pretty neat, honestly, though it didn't help any with the feeling they were LARPing in public. The tools inside were different now, too, though just as useless: a chisel, some sort of small hammer, a very small knife, a length of cord, and what looked suspiciously like lock picks. Those last ones could be useful, they supposed, if they'd ever learned how to pick locks. Or if there were, in fact, doors in the OK. They certainly hadn't seen any yet.

They made some use of the knife, at least; turning a ridiculously oversized strawberry into reasonable slices. Something about the giant fruit made them feel very childish. It was like something out of a picture book. Everyone else seemed to be fine, though. They were just being self-conscious, as usual.

"Actually, Sulla ma'am, you don't have a minute to sort my shoulder out, do you? I, uh, forgot to mention it."

The fruit stuck in Joe's throat. Idiot. You forgot that he was hurt, too. Andreas had seemed to recover so quickly, they'd let themselves slip into complacency. But he'd been shot. Nobody just "got over" that. Their face went hot. Suddenly they weren't hungry anymore.

    Then the howling began.

It was horrible. Primal, hungry, it echoed around the inside of their skull and down into their gut. It felt like claws down their spine. There were so many voices, and from all directions at once. Every part of them was screaming hide, run, escape! When Sulla stood with hate burning in her eyes, they were glad - glad they didn't have to fight again, glad there was someone powerful to protect them.

Then Alex ran out screaming like a moron.

"WHY" was all Joe managed before they realized they were already running after him. When the curtain of moss parted they could see him, looking way too confident, facing down a wall of hairy, fanged, carnivorous death. There were at least a dozen of them. What the hell was Alex thinking!?

Then the black wolf snarled their command, and Alex ran to meet them.

"You f*cking moron!" Joe dashed after him without a thought in their head besides keeping anyone else from dying. But Alex had a head start of several steps - he'd be torn to shreds before Joe could reach him. What the hell could they even do!? They had the chance to learn a new spell, and they still hadn't learned anything that would useful in a fight!

Focus, nimrod. Too late to turn around.

Their hand came out of their pocket clutching a fragment of the coffee cube. Bit in two, it scraped their throat as they swallowed. Oh please please please let this be enough of a boost, please let it work this way. They forced the swallow as they leapt forward, clutching at Alex's clothing. Grabbing ahold of all their magic, they phased both Alex and themselves out just as the nearest werewolf slashed out with a clawed hand. It rippled through them in a way that felt far too close to solid. Joe adjusted their grip around Alex's waist as the two of them began to sink into the earth. The phasing was enough to protect them, but Alex's weight was dragging them both down, somehow. Their power would keep them safe for this moment, the next... How long before the caffeine kicked in? They'd either be ripped apart, or fall into the earth and suffocate...

Wait, what was Alex's new spell again?

"Fly, you jackass! Fly!" If Joe kept phasing both of them, would they be light enough? They better be, or the two of them would be nothing but bloody rags in a few seconds.

Darkness Incarnate is a person. Vetala's a person." She stabbed a piece of orange and popped it into her motuh. "Other than that, yeah, everything's awesome."

Drake nodded to himself. He was glad to have that girl on their team. She was like this superhero, and not just because she was practically bulletproof. She really was the heroic type, unlike him who never seemed to care enough.

"Alternatedimensions?" Trisana repeated, buying time. "Weeelll, I know a lotabout those things. What's not tolike about 'em? Let's see...there'ssupposed to be a lot of 'em, that'sfor sure. And Is'pose there's an Evil Trisana andan Evil Drake in one of 'em, too..." "Wouldn'tyou rather want to talk about us? As in you and I?"

So Trisana wasn't going to be the Fridge breakthrough he hoped for. On the other hand, she really seemed to be hitting on him. And hitting was always beyond flirting, or so he was told. No but that was impossible.

"Umm, what do you mean?" he asked, his heart suddenly racing, face heating.

Then a howl pierced the air. Drake got up abruptly, his heart now fluttering for very different reasons. A pack of werewolves faced off against them. Thirteen of them.

Alex seemed to play the suicidal hero again, charging at the wolves. Joe played the surprising hero, by taking Alex down to the ground with him. Now was he going to play the sissy hero by teleporting them all away right?

Idiot. He stopped time. He didn't have much in him without rest, but it was enough for some quick thinking. Really quick. A wolfman was about three meters away from him, mid leap, a feral snarl on its face and some drool frozen around him. It would have even been funny if it wasn't so damn terrifying.

Teleporting them all was out of question. There's no way he'd be able to do that in time. He could just disappear he knew. Teleport away and live another day. Then again, he wasn't going to last a minute in this kingdom on his own. At least that's wht he told himself the reason was. So if he took flight out of the equation, he was left with... Holy shit.

The smart thing would be to get behind enemy lines and take out the black one, no racism intended. But it would also be the suicidal thing.

The time stop ended. The wolf, in mid leap, closed the distance between hikm and Drake. But after the time stop he knew exactly where the werewolf was going to land. He teleported at the last second, and the wolf collided into a tree.

He appeared right next to Nora. "I hope you have it in you to take the black one out," he whispered. "I'm going to teleport you behind the enemy lines."

"I hope you have it in you to take the black one out," he whispered. "I'm going to teleport you behind the enemy lines."

"Take me instead," Samara said, suddenly standing beside him in full armor. After Alex ran off, she had calmly stood up and crossed the room to say something to their teacher. Drake's sudden appearance didn't even faze her. "Nora, you look after Sulla. Keep her out of this. The alpha wolf's mine.," Samara said in a tone that made it clear this wasn't up for debate.

Sulla's story had given Samara the impression these wolves were savage, mindless beasts. But, no, they had a leader. He gave orders using words. Human words. And they obeyed those orders. Leaders could be toppled. She didn't have to beat thirteen wolves, just one really big one. Really, really, really big. Piece of cake.

"Get me there and then teleport yourself back," Samara said to Drake. "No matter what happens, do not help, even if it kills me."

"Right," he said. He took Samara's hand and soon enough they were behind the alpha. He took a step back and one long breath. She didn't need to worry though. No way was he going to take a massive werewolf head on

The wolf was a lot bigger up close. No pup, this one. Samara weighed her options. Add spikes to her armor? No, those sacrificed defense and made it difficult to move. She doubted they would deter this wolf anyway. Make her plating thicker? No, that would slow her down, and the heavy armor was slightly harder to repair in the heat of battle.

Better just stick with what I know, she thought as she stepped forward. No tricks. No gimmicks. Just walk up to him and hit him with everything you've got... and try not to die.

"Thanks," she said to Drake, without taking her eyes off the wolf. "If I don't make it back, I want you to know I'm sorry. I have always thought you a coward. Today has been... educational."

"Umm, cheers?" he said. Just assume it was a compliment, he thought. He took another couple of steps back, staying as far away from those claws as he could.

"I was going to fly anyway!" Alex yelled at Joe. Then he wrapped his arms around them and looked up to the sky. They both lifted ten feet above the ground and gracefully landed under the cover of the trees. "I knew you guys would be right behind me," Alex explained. "I was just gonna slice one or two of them in half and then fly away. You know, hit-and-run style." As he spoke, two wolves pounced on them and they all went tumbling in a heap on the ground. Alex managed to conjure a pendulum that sliced the first one straight down the middle. The second wolf was pinning Joe to the ground and it opened its mouth in preparation to bite his throat.

Nora was about to argue with Samara, but then she shut her mouth and nodded. She wasn't in charge anymore. She couldn't tell Samara what to do. And it made sense for Nora to stick by Sulla: the rest of the Moss Women had not been able to fight off the werewolves, so why would Sulla be able to? I couldn't forgive myself if Sulla died and the Moss Women were completely wiped out. So Nora stood next to Sulla and blasted the nearest wolf with ice magic. He froze from head to tail in mid-air and crashed to the ground, shattering on impact. Another wolf tried to come at them from the side, but Sulla fended it off with a crack of her whip. "You will pay for what you did to my sisters!" Sulla screamed, lashing her whip again.

The black wolf coolly examined Samara with two huge ink-black eyes, looking her up and down. "Aren't you a tasty morsel," it growled in barely comprehensible English. "You will do quite nicely for dinner. But first, I'll have to crack that crystal shell of yours..." The wolf chuckled deep in its throat and reared up on it's hind legs, standing over eight feet tall. Then it proceeded to rip a nearby tree clear out of the ground, roots and all. With a mighty swipe, it swung the tree at Samara like a giant club.

Nyx stayed quiet the entire walk to the Moss Women's village. She hung away from the rest of the group, alone with her thoughts.

Ninety percent of those thoughts were one word, repeated over and over. "Murderer," her mind whispered. After the thrill of confrontation faded, she felt empty. She felt empty and so, so guilty.

Worse, she knew that if she kept beating herself down, she'd probably sink into depression, and there was nothing she could do to stop it.

Just give me a fight, she pleaded with the universe. I'm good at fighting. Besides, it'll keep my mind off of all this bullshit.

Nyx stayed as far away as she could from Sulla, when they finally reached the destroyed village. For all she knew, the Moss Woman had some mystical ability to sense who was hurt, and then she would make her do some bullshit moss-therapy or whatever.

For once, the universe accepted her request. Werewolves, fucking werewolves, came charging through the clearing, apparently out for blood.

Alex, somehow unsurprisingly, charged forward with an inhuman battle cry. Joe ran after him, obviously trying to keep the guy from getting killed.

Well, I guess I asked for it, Nyx thought. A part of her felt glad at the distraction. Plus, she could try out that new spell of hers, Energize.

With a deep breath, she focused on the life forms around her. The cool, mature energy of Mrs.-- Nora was strong and close. Nyx shook her head, focusing on the hulking brutes battling in front of her. Their energy was brutal and sharp, primal, yet connected- intimately, almost.

There. Nyx couldn't focus on all of them at once, but she could establish a link with one or two of the werewolves, and slowly drain their energy from them. Nyx grinned, adrenaline rising and sharpening her focus and making her forget the last day--

"Energize," she whispered. The spell took effect immediately. She instantly felt more alert.

Nyx held up her hand and summoned her electricity orb, surprised at the amount of power she felt thrumming through the ball.

    Must be the Old Kingdom.

Nyx aimed carefully, and lobbed the ball at one of the werewolves, letting out an internal cheer when he (she? They?) fell over, twitching. It's not the same. They're not human. They're probably not even dead, they're fucking werewolves. Get your head back in the game, Nyx.

Nyx whirled around, hearing the bone-chilling chuckle from a good eight meters away.

"SHIT!" she yelled, eyes wide. Pulling as much energy as she could from the other werewolves without passing out, she launched herself forward, a giant ball of lightning floating between both palms. With a grunt, she shoved it at the huge black wolf, and watched with satisfaction as it made contact.

But the damage was already done.

Wow, that was better. No itching, no aching, his arm back like new. Amazing. Then he looked at Sulla with a silly grin. Did she just tweak his nose? The old Andreas would have said 'what am I, six?' but the lady had just fixed his arm. He sensed nothing but benignity from her. Ah, heck. It was darned cute.

Bloodcurdling howls. Time for that manning up we were talking about, Andreas buddy. There they were, stood like a trained army. This was simple, the impregnable Samara would wade into battle and soak up most of the attention. Which would allow more offensive warriors to zip 'round back and take on the leader. Alex had that pendulum, maybe - no, Alex was charging and screaming. Looks like Joe was seeing to that. Still, they had rainbows and lightening. Then Drake took Samara and zipped her 'round back. Well, whatever.

A wolfman pounced. His neck was nice and squishy and ground very well. Andreas was bowled over by the heavy, flying bulk of the spluttering beast and they landed in a heap. He heaved the defeated mass away and rose to all fours. Another beast grimaced at the sight of his bleeding brother and glared viciously at Andreas. He couldn't grind at this range. That point just above his right eye... the beast's face relaxed. He even did a playful little roll in the moss, and by then Andreas had dashed past him mushing his chest cavity on the way. Levity, a battle spell. Who'd have thought.

There was a ripping sound. The big one had just ripped a tree out of the ground! All eyes were either on the leader or Nyx as she soaked up energy and released it in attack. Andreas took the moment to throw himself to the ground and cover himself with the abundant loose moss. He was completely hidden in the middle of the battle, but he could just see out. Perfect.

Back under the trees, claws on warped hands pinned Joe and forced the air out of their lungs. The beast was one of the bipedal ones. Their fur was long and shone silver, almost white in the moonlight. The ice blue eyes were shockingly human, making the primal hatred inside them all the more unsettling. But there was nothing human about the jaws that came down to snap through Joe's neck.

Just shy of too late, they phased out everything above their shoulders. The jaws shut with a crash, passing through like smoke, but Joe had been a little too slow. Their neck stung. Oh f*ck, this is it, I'm dying I'm really dying oh god I don't want to die! But the blood wasn't pumping out, just bleeding normally. The werewolf had missed the jugular vein. But they were clearly ready to make another attempt.

Joe threw their hands up and somehow caught the edges of the creature's mouth. They dug into the soft flesh of the gum with their thumbnails as hard as they could. The wolf yelped, or perhaps screamed would be a better word. Joe rolled away and flickered into invisibility. ...Except these were wolves, and they could probably just smell them. F*ck. This spell was just about useless, wasn't it.

The silver wolf was glaring around in all directions as, sure enough, it sniffed over and over at the air. Just as the pale blue eyes narrowed and the beast turned towards them, Joe sidestepped and leapt haphazardly onto their back. One arm went around the wolf's neck, the other grabbed ahold of one pointy ear and squeezed hard. If wolves were anything like dogs, this should hurt a lot. According to the Internet, anyway.

"Why are you doing this!?" Joe practically screamed at them. "Why the f*ck would you attack these people!?"

    Samara

Samara's repertoire of spells requires a certain masochistic mindset. After all, what use is armor if you don't get hit? Especially armor that can soak up kinetic energy and deal it back in spades. Getting hit is all part of the fun!

When the wolf upended a tree and prepared to swing for the fences, she felt the usual mixture of dread and glee wash over her, like a bucket of electrified ice water. On one hand, I might die. But, if I somehow survive this, I'll have everything I need to give this wolf the thrashing of a lifetime. You better kill me, Samara thought, because if you don't, I will bury my crystal boot so far up your furry ass you'll shit diamonds til the day you die.

Well, today must be a bad day for wolves (and trees). He didn't kill her. She braced for impact, planting her feet wide. Samara latched onto the tree like a bear. The force of the impact knocked her back, digging her heels deeper into the mossy earth. She tried to wrench it free of his grasp, but only sicceeded in ripping the trunk in half. It shattered in a hail of splinters and Samara tossed aside what was left.

"Bad dog," she said, wagging a finger at him, just as Nyx raced toward him with an orb of lightning between her palms. Samara popped the caffeine cube into her mouth and launched herself forward, her fully-charged armor glowing white.

    Trisana

The werewolves had arrived. "Aw, dammit," Trisana grumbled. "I didn't even get to try a giant peach!" Then, after the battle began, Trisana was swinging her Shiny Sword at the advancing wolves and wolf-men when she overheard Sulla crying out, "You will pay for what you did to my sisters!" Trisana froze for a moment. Bejeezus, I had almost forgotten about that, she thought forlornly. These wolves killed all the Moss Women and now Sulla is the last one. The magnitude of that...it only just hit me. But Trisana didn't wallow in sadness for long: a roaring furnace of anger ignited in her chest and she started to breath heavily like a mad beast. She was royally pissed and all her fiery rage was directed at the werewolves.

How dare they do this? The Moss Women were a peaceful, all-female tribe that heals people from all over the Old Kingdom! How dare they snuff them out like the flames on birthday candles!? How
    DARE they!?!?

Just as her anger was reaching a crescendo, a burly grey wolf ran at her and swatted the Shiny Sword out of her grasp with swipe of its heavy paw. Trisana staggered and the wolf crouched down to pounce. "For the Moss Womeeeen!!!" Trisana screamed at the top of her lungs. The wolf paused, hesitant, and Trisana took advantage of the pause to conjure the Silver Staff: it appeared in her hands in a huge flash of silver glitter, like heavenly stardust. The quartz crystal fixed to the top of the Silver Staff was bigger than both of Trisana's fists put together. "Take this, you mangy mutt!" Trisana yelled, stealing Alex's insult from earlier. She raised the Staff high and a focused beam of moonlight struck the werewolf in the middle of its broad head.

"Yeah!" Trisana cheered, and she started to dance as if she was in the middle of a club. Then she stepped on Andreas's leg and fell onto her back, the Silver Staff disappearing in a gorgeous shower of stardust. "Ouchies!" she squeaked, rubbing the back of her skull, which was bleeding from a gash. "Oh, for shit's sake! Oops!" Trisana covered her mouth and glanced towards Nora. "I hope the teacher didn't here me," she muttered. Ms Wintersmith might be "Nora" now, but Trisana still didn't feel comfortable cussing in front of her.

Nyx's energy drain caused several werewolves to stop and sway from the sudden wave of fatigue. The first one she struck with a lightning ball and it jumped five feet in the air in shock. When it came down, it ran in a circle with a smoldering tail. It stopped and glowered at Nyx with intense crimson eyes while she was shooting a charged-up lightning ball at the black Alpha wolf. "Tiny sorceress will be in my gullet soon," it growled darkly. "And then I will finish off your friends and dismantle the last Moss Woman out of pure spite." It chuckled deep down inside its chest just like the black wolf had done with Samara, and then it lunged at Nyx with all of its strength.

Joe rode a werewolf as it bucked wildly, trying to throw them off, and then it whined pitifully as they yanked its highly sensitive ear. "Yowowow!" the large canine howled comically. As Joe yelled at it, the werewolf's jaws whipped around and clamped around their right pants leg. With a might tug it pulled Joe off and vigorously shook them. Then it tossed Joe in the air and they came down heavily and rolled a few feet away. "We kill because it's fun," the wolf growled as it stalked forward. "And I will enjoy killing you the most of all."

Trisana and Drake took down their own respective numbers of werewolves, steadily diminishing the savage pack.

The black wolf had snarled and taken a staggering step to the side after it was hit with Nyx's electric attack, a deeply singed patch marking his flank and the smell of burnt meat filling the air. Thusly it was distracted when Samara made her move: she charged into him and sent the bear-sized Alpha flying into a tree. It crashed straight through the initial tree, toppled a second tree for good measure, and bent a third one in half. Finally, the black wolf came to a stop and struggled to it's feet. It looked pathetic, already beaten by this group of meddling kids. But then the inky-black shadows around it started to pulse and twitch and come to life. They slithered along the ground like snakes and were absorbed into the Alpha. It swelled in size and stood tall, growling so deeply that the earth trembled from the vibrations. The Darkness was giving him the strength to fight on.

"I am Alpha," the black wolf said through gritted fangs. Then it threw back it's head and howled, a long, spine-chilling note. Suddenly, the night was filled with howling wolves in the distance. "Recruitments," the Alpha said with a menacing smile. In response to the Alpha's howl, dozens of normal wolves started to pour out of the trees and run circles around the sorcerers, closing in like a noose. They were under the Alpha's power and they would fight the sorcerers to the death.

"Back!" Sulla yelled, lashing her whip at the new wolves. "Back!" A scrappy teenage wolf leaped forward and gripped her vine-whip between its teeth. Sulla cried out in shock as it yanked the whip out of her hand and two other wolves rushed forward to get her. Nora, who had been busy covering Sulla's blind spot, saw the two wolves and felled one with a quick blast of ice magic. Sulla got the second one by raising her hands high and trapping it in a sudden wave of moss that grew up from the ground. Then she lowered her hands and the moss swallowed the wolf into the earth as if it had never existed.

But there were plenty more wolves, five to each sorcerer, and they were stalking closer with deadly intent.

    Samara

Gotcha, Samara thought, proudly, after she sent the wolf flying through multiple trees. She figured that would knock the wind out of its sails and make the other wolves take notice. Not so ‘alpha’ anymore, are you?

Naturally, it disagreed. Its piercing howl cut through the moonlit air and was answered by dozens more. Samara’s heart sank. She should’ve known there would be more. She should’ve known the Darkness would be drawn to this one. They were fighting more than mere wolves; they were at war with a force that threatened the entire world.

Save the world, she thought as she steeled her nerves and prepared to continue the fight, ‘til death if she must. The alpha must be the key. Why would the Darkness feed it and not the others? Sever the link and they might be able to end this without slaughtering all of these beasts.

Samara sprinted to intercept the wolf targeting Nyx and barreled into it, knocking it off course and into a nearby tree. The attack wasn’t charged like the one she’d used against the alpha, but it was enough.

“I think he likes you, ‘Tiny Sorceress,’” Samara teased. “Try not to feed him, okay?”

She knelt down, placed her right hand flat on the ground, and suddenly became far more serious. “I have an idea, but I don’t know if it will work,” she said solemnly. “Can you cover me for a minute or so, Nyx?”

It wasn’t really a question; Samara was going to try this anyway, even if a hundred wolves pounced on her. She began to mutter the incantation in Latin, completely oblivious to everything around her and trusting that Nyx would guard her, as she had guarded them.

“O, kings of old, please hear my plea.
Your trusted vassal, on bended knee…”

A pulsing ring of pale yellow light appeared on the ground around her hand. With each word another concentric ring appeared, each larger than the last.

“Lend me, please, in this darkest hour,
A fraction of your awesome power…”

Ancient symbols and geometric shapes began to appear in the rings as Samara’s hand phased into the ground, until she was up to her elbow in the dirt. The look on her face showed great concentration, but also looked as if she was searching for something in the ground or in whatever dimension she had reached into.

“By your strength, I will stand firm,
Though all around me, the world may burn…”

She found it. Samara wrapped her fingers around the hilt of a weapon and pulled, but it wouldn’t budge. She reached her other hand into the portal and braced her feet, using all of her strength. The portal began to glow brightly, as if it was straining to fight her, or test her.

    “Come to me…. Excalibur!”

The sword suddenly came free of its dimension and she pulled it into this world. The impossibly long blade slid out of the portal, which vanished with a thunderclap and a sprinkling of stardust that lingered like fireflies around her. Samara had never actually seen the sword before and marveled at it for a moment. It felt weightless in her hands and was faintly translucent. She could see Nyx through it, like a frosted window.

She expected it to be… fancier. It was just a plain, double-bladed longsword, straight as an arrow and nearly six feet long from tip to pommel. Looked sort of like a crucifix, actually. Not surprising for something used to kill a witch. How ironic that a sorceress would wield it now.

“Finally worthy, am I?” Samara said, mostly to herself, though it probably looked as if she was talking to the sword. “We shall see.”

    Drake
Everything was happening so fast, Drake barely had time to acknowledge it all. Nyx joined Samara and they were kicking the alpha's ass. Joe came seconds away from dying, but managed to hold his groung. Tristine was hitting at another werewolf with a staff looking hotter than ever, and even Andreas tore through a wolf's body, leaving a bloody trail. And in the meantime, he was sitting ducks, doing literally nothing.

Then everything seemed to go to hell. The leader was suddenly covered in shadowy tentacles, and became twice as big. And at the same time howls filled the forest. Reenforcements were coming. Well, shit. At least Samara did what could be the coolest thing anyone in this story has ever done by bringing forth mother freakin Excalibur. Problem was, she could reach about the alpha's kneecap. It was just so big.

So big. A crazy thought formed in his head. And the more he thought about it the crazier it seemed. He was most likely to die trying, but then again, he would probably die anyway. He stopped time momentarily, to get his breath. He would need to be precise doing this. Very precise.

He closed his eyes in concentratin. "Teleport," he said. He appeared behind the wolf's right leg. For a moment his knees buckled, and he fell forward, grabbing the alpha's knee. "Teleport," he said.

And he was in the air. Several miles away from the fight scene and so high that his bones seemed to freeze in his body and he was about to choke. He quickly let go of the werewolf leader. "The bigger they are," he breathed. "Teleport."

And he was back in the middle of the battle. "The harder they fall," he finished, dropping down on his ass. He was covered in freezing sweat, and shaking like his dad's 70s Mitsubishi. He took out the caffiene tablet and popped it in his mouth. Somewhere, far away he hoped, the alpha was crashing to his death. Hopefully nobody lived down there.

“I think he likes you, ‘Tiny Sorceress,’” Samara teased. “Try not to feed him, okay?” Nyx snorted and nodded in agreement.

"I specialize in pissing people off," Nyx drawled, holding up a sparking palm. "Thanks, though. That could've ended... badly."

Samara nodded. She knelt down, placed her right hand flat on the ground, and suddenly became far more serious. “I have an idea, but I don’t know if it will work,” she said solemnly. “Can you cover me for a minute or so, Nyx?

"Of course," Nyx said, settling into a defensive stance and eyeing the pack of normal wolves. "Energize," she said, releasing the two werewolves she had previously been drawing from, and latching on to the alpha wolf. He seemed to be drawing energy from the darkness, and she needed a steady supply of energy in order to keep all of those wolves at bay. Plus, having to deal with that wolf/man/dickhead again would be annoying.

Nyx cracked her knuckles and flexed her fingers, pulling electricity from the air and weaving it around her fingers and feet. Her electricity ball was a good long-distance weapon, but they took too long to re-generate, and it seemed like she was going to have to get physical this time. Punches hurt more if they were electric.

    She hoped.

Samara started to chant in Latin, some complicated spell-- oh, that must be why she had declined learning a new spell. She already had one.

This better be good, Nyx thought tersely, eyeing the wolves as they got closer. They were almost foaming at the mouth. Hurry up.

Nyx held out her hand and threw a lightning ball into the pack. Might as well knock some of them out before they reached the group. Nyx took a deep breath, and concentrated, holding up both palms. A little sphere of lightning popped into existence above each. Nyx hurled one at the pack, and the next at another werewolf, the one who had hurt Joe. It tumbled to the ground, twitching. After a few seconds, it stopped.

    “Come to me…. Excalibur!”

    "What the fuck,"
Nyx exclaimed, whirling around. "What the actual fuck?! You- Excalibur!" Nyx just gaped for a moment. The sword was simple, but beautiful nonetheless. For some reason though, it was translucent, just enough that she could see Samara's face through it.

“Finally worthy, am I?” Samara said, mostly to herself, though it probably looked as if she was talking to the sword. “We shall see.”

"Excalibur! You're so fucking badass, what the hell," Nyx breathed, still in shock. She shook it off. "Okay, fine, surprises are fine. Let's just kill this alpha dude, and--" She cut herself off, looking around. The alpha wolf was gone. And there was no more energy coming through the connection.

Drake suddenly stumbled back into existence, looking completely exhausted. He was shaking, even.

"Oh," she said. Drake must have taken care of the Alpha. Alright, she could deal with that. But there were still giant wolves racing toward them, and they were almost here. "Shit," she swore, lowering herself back into a fighting stance. Even though she had taken out a few of the wolves, there were still dozens left.

"Everyone!" she shouted, projecting as loudly as she could over the fighting. "We need to form a ring, or team up with someone, back-to-back! That way no one can sneak up behind us!" Yeah right, she was going to let anyone else get hurt. She looked at Samara and nodded, once. "Partners?" she asked, not waiting for an answer. Then she turned her gaze back to the pack.

"Energize," she said, locking on to two untouched and unfatigued werewolves. She was going to need a lot of energy to survive this fight. Nyx held up her sparking fists, ready to fight. "Bring it on," she whispered to herself.

    And then they came.

Just like in the school corridor with Vetala. Stay unnoticed, intervene when it mattered. Unexpected. Using his meager powers to maximum effect. Precise. Efficient.

Then she stepped on Andreas's leg and fell onto her back, the Silver Staff disappearing in a gorgeous shower of stardust. "Ouchies!" she squeaked, rubbing the back of her skull, which was bleeding from a gash.

"I'm so sorry! I was trying to - " but another wolf was already advancing on him. It found its brains pouring out of its nose. Then there was a mighty howl, and the Alpha was absorbing tendrils of shadow. Andreas gaped in horror. What doomy Old Kingdom shit was this? And yet he couldn't help but be reminded of his pothead cousin. The way the smoke-filled room would be sucked into him when he inhaled, the wolf absorbing the shadows looked a bit like that. Dam, he was weirder than he thought.

A pulsing ring of pale yellow light appeared on the ground around her hand. With each word another concentric ring appeared, each larger than the last.

God, Samara did put on a good act. And her leg was showing.
"Argh!" he yelled as one of the normal wolves snapped its teeth into his hand. He brought his other hand up to prize it out and they ended up rolling around in turmoil, a mess of teeth, boots and claws. Andreas couldn't grind without his hands free but he shifted the moisture around in its eyes. That bought him his hands back and it, too, dribbled brains out of its snout.

"What the fuck," Nyx exclaimed, whirling around.

Panicking, he whipped around to look at Nyx. She was fine, and Samara was - where the fuck did that come from? It was beautiful!

"We need to form a ring, or team up with someone, back-to-back! That way no one can sneak up behind us!"

Andreas hobbled over to join Nyx and Samara in a triangle, though they seemed not to notice. Andreas chose his targets. There were at least five stalking him alone, and still more wolves were approaching out of the darkness. The wolves attacked, and there was bloody chaos. Throats, eyes, brains, lungs, hearts - whatever his focus landed on was crushed. Hitting targets under pressure took a hideous amount of concentration but using his intention-reading ability gave him warning of which wolf would strike next. More kept appearing.
"There's so many!" he gasped. He began moving water around to distract some wolves while tracking their intentions and grinding others. Adrenaline barely allowed him to use so many forms of magic at once but his body and mind were tiring quickly. And he had no hands free to take that damned caffeine cube. Sooner or later his focus was going to slip. And that would be the end of him.

When Drake teleported the Alpha far, far away, the giant wolf thrashed and snarled uselessly. It fell to the ground and left a massive crater in the snow-covered ground. At the bottom, the wolf lay still, deceased. A mighty creature brought low by a teenage sorcerer. Back at the clearing, the remaining nine werewolves froze mid-fight. They could sense that their Alpha was gone. "I am Alpha now," a wiry brown wolf growled. A larger gray wolf snarled at him. "No, I am Alpha," he retorted. The other werewolves joined the argument and they jumped on each other, rolling into the bushes and out of sight.

But the normal wolves that the black wolf had summoned were still in action. They stopped and shook their heads in confusion after the Alpha was gone, but quickly regained their senses and continued to close in on the sorcerers. With or without the Alpha's influence, they were hungry wolves and they would not give up an opportunity for a good meal. There were thirty-six of them in all; Nora and Sulla glanced at each other with a mutual feeling of acceptance and steely determination. They were both bone-tired, and they might be about to die, but they were sure as hell going to take as many wolves with them as possible.

Just as the wolves were about to charge, the clearing was flooded with brilliant white light. All around them in the trees, spears of light had appeared. The wolves responded by turning to growled at the newcomers, their fur standing on end and their tails puffing out. One of the light-spears entered the clearing and they could all see that it was attached to the head of a pure-white horse with a flowing blonde mane. It was a unicorn.

"You've got to be kidding me," Alex mumbled in shock and awe.

The unicorn reared up and kicked the air with its hooves, letting out a furious whinny. Then it galloped forward and speared one of the wolves with its shining horn. As one, the rest of the unicorns charged forward to join the first, stomping out the wolves and spearing them at every turn. Finally, the wolves tucked in their tails and retreated like streaks of furry lightning into the night. Once they were gone, the unicorns' horns dimmed and they could see that they were made of clear crystal. And not all of the unicorns were white, some were silvery grey, pitch-black, dappled with spots, calico, russet, and there was even a pastel pink one. The unicorn that had killed the first wolf trotted up to the sorcerers and bowed to them, while the others waited behind him.

"Thank you so much," Sulla said, tears streaming from her golden eyes. "How can we possibly repay you?"

The unicorn shook its head and whinnied, as if to say, "You don't owe us anything."

"Bow," Nora whispered to her students, and then she knelt on the ground. Alex followed her lead, moving slowly as if he was in a dream. "I can't believe this," he muttered to himself.

The leader unicorn turned from Sulla to Nora and touched his horn to her head. The horn glowed softly and then the unicorn stepped away. Nora smiled and nodded to the unicorn before saying, "This is Dancer. He wanted me to tell you all that no matter how dark things may get, to always remember that there is still goodness in the Old Kingdom. The unicorn herd has been hunting dark creatures for days now and they felt the surge of Darkness in Greenwood and came as swiftly as they could. Dancer also offered to guard us while we sleep and give us a ride to our next destination in the morning. We would be deeply grateful for that," Nora told the unicorn directly.

Dancer huffed and trotted away to kneel down on an especially thick patch of moss. The rest of the unicorns trotted forward and waded through the sorcerers, sniffing them curiously. Nora sighed heavily and got back to her feet. "That could have turned out bad," she muttered to Sulla.

Sulla grinned wryly and replied, "I guess our luck hasn't completely ran out just yet, Lady Wintersmith." To the students, she said, "How 'bout you kids feed the unicorns? We've got plenty of food to spare inside."

The wind had gone out of Joe's lungs when the werewolf threw them down. It reared above them, and for one gut-wrenching moment it seemed they really were about to die this time. Then a little ball of lightning smashed into the side of the monster's head, and it fell, twitched, and at last lay still. With a bewildered glance, Joe's eye landed on Nyx with hands outstretched. She'd protected them.

    "We kill because it's fun."

The words echoed in Joe's head as they stared at the dead beast, its silver-white fur burned black. They'd always thought that kind of line was, well, cheesy. It was the kind of thing exclusively used by cartoon villains. But hearing it come from that monster, a snarling avatar of hunger and death, uttered without a hint of irony... It was terrifyingly sincere, and Joe found they were shaking as they remembered it.

"Come to me...Excalibur!" Wait, what? Holy-

    "What the fuck!?"
Yep, that about summed it up.

Drake was back, and the Alpha was gone. Holy crap. Now the others were all gathering together in a circle against the gathering swarm of wolves. Joe stumbled to their feet and dashed to join them. With a blind grab they snatched a tool from their bag, which turned out to be the chisel. Flickering invisible, Joe dove through the wolves toward the others, inflicting stabs and jabs on any animal that got in their way. Nothing they did was going to take one out, but they could at least spread confusion, and maybe convince a few to turn around and run. Without the alpha, they were all falling into chaos.

It was too much, of course. The caffeine was keeping them moving, but it wasn't enough to take on an army. Snapping jaws got lucky more than once, and Joe was bleeding from a couple places with still several meters between them and the others. There were just too many of them. Everyone was going to die.

The light of the unicorns was blinding. When their eyes cleared, it was like a completely different world. The wolves were gone, and in their place were the most beautiful beings Joe had ever seen or imagined. They were like solid light, vessels barely containing the brilliant magic within them. Though they were in shades of white and grey and black, they shimmered with a thousand different colours as they moved, and even the darkest amoung them seemed aglow from within.

One with a black coat, slender and small, trotted up to them and met their gaze with deep, intelligent eyes. Joe stroked their muzzle several times, gently and unthinkingly, before hearing Miss Wintersmith's whisper. "Bow." They hurriedly pulled their hand back and bowed deeply to the herd. The little unicorn just flicked their tail and nudged their hand again, apparently unnoffended.

How 'bout you kids feed the unicorns? We've got plenty of food to spare inside."

"Y-Yes please! ...If that's alright." ...But wait. They glanced across at the others. Andreas' hand was bleeding from a nasty bite, and Drake was visibly shaking. Everyone looked tired and hurt. They couldn't just keep assuming the others were going to be alright. "Uh! But, first- Miss Sulla, if you would please- I think some of us need healing again. I, um, I can help, though." Take care of the others first, and then see to themselves. Then they could bring food to the unicorns.

They were really looking forward to that.

    Trisana

Trisana was tired. She was riddled with scratches, her hair was an absolute mess, and her pristine white clothes were covered in dirt and moss stains. She was almost to the point of simply fainting from exhaustion (as Mortimer said would inevitably happen after the caffeine chew wore off) when the unicorns appeared. Trisana's brain exploded. She froze in one place with her jaw hanging open as the unicorns galloped majestically around the clearing, dealing with the vicious wolves that had just been about to slaughter them. When it was all over, Trisana watched with extreme jealousy as the white unicorn (named Dancer, apparently) communicated with Nora and she relayed his message to them.

We can finally sleep, Trisana thought, dizzy with happiness. We can sleep in peace as these beautiful creatures protect us. This is a freaking dream come true.

That's when Dancer went to lay down and the unicorn herd trotted forward to sniff at them. Trisana nearly screamed from joy when the pastel pink unicorn walked up to her and gently nibbled a lock of her hair. "Oh!" was all Trisana could get out before she burst into tears of happiness and threw her arms around the pink unicorn's neck. She had dreamed of unicorns all her life, ever since she was a little girl. She decided right then and there that she was not leaving the Old Kingdom. Never. What did she have to go home to? A class full of kids that didn't like her because she was too peppy and a mother who verbally abused her. Nope, Trisana wasn't going anywhere, she was going to stay right here with the unicorns and the fairies and, and...

She didn't finish her train of thought because she fell asleep, just like that, in a standing position with her arms around a unicorn. The unicorn laid his head on her shoulder and huffed sympathetically, as if to say, "Poor girl-child, she's so tired that she fell asleep on her feet." Trisana smiled dreamily and started to snore.
