Greetings. I've had an epic high fantasy style story and characters in my head for a long time and I've had a few false starts in trying to actually start writing it but recently tried again and now I've managed to put something together. I decided to go the route of writing a short intro chapter for each of the eight characters that will be bound together by fate and I'll go from there. I recently joined another forum (mentioning no names but let's just say it has a very similar name to this forum) but have been really put off by the hostility I received towards a very basic poem I posted. I think I offended their pretension of 'deepness' by daring to submit a poem that consistently rhymes. There's also a very patronising undertone to the critiques that I wrote off as just me being overly sensitive to start with. Anyway, enough of that. I haven't done any creative writing before and don't know anything about it but maybe that's a good thing in some ways as it means I'm free to write without having any habits or rules to follow. I'm looking for feedback so I'd love to know what you think of it. It's called The Circle. Edit: I'm not able to post in the writing section yet. Do I need a certain post count or is it time based? The FAQ section just says it doesn't allow posts until you've been around for a while.
Hello, yes there should be a guidelines for Workshop postings in your Inbox. If not you have to meet the criteria: 20 Comments and 2 Critiques, for every one posting in the Workshop.
Okay, that makes sense, thanks. I've realised you can't edit posts after a certain amount of time. I wanted to take out the bit about the other site. I was annoyed when I wrote that.
Eh, don't worry about it. We all need to rant once and a while. So here I go...I think it's great that you'll be fresh with no rules to follow and so forth, worry about those in the editing stages. But, here's a tip for when you do start writing. Make sure your structure is on par (not saying it isn't now). I don't mean story structure, I mean paragraphs and such. It will make your writing, reading, and revising so much easier. Each new character dialogue starts on a new line, paragraphs are indented, etc. Basically make your WIP look like a book. It will be so much help, I promise. Good luck on starting a new adventure!
Thanks. That part's not a problem and I think I've got a very nice idea with lots of potential, it's just writing it well enough to do it justice.
You'll be able to edit your posts after you've been around a while, that's just a security feature to stop a spambot joining with an innocuous message that later turns into an ad for all-natural male enhancement... Welcome to the board, this place is quite friendly, but you will get honest critiques of your work. Not rude, just honest. Have fun!
Thanks. I just need to get my post count up now. I've just started the first revision of what I've written so far so hopefully it will be ready about the same time I can actually post it.
I want to post the prologue to my story but I'm still not able to. I've been here two weeks now and I've made enough posts, nearly all critiques. Is it not automatic, does an admin have to manually okay my profile?
I'm not staff, but it looks like you've got one more day maybe on those two weeks? Might not roll over right til midnight or something.
I've now got the option to start a new thread but when I try I get: "Internal Server Error" and it says I should contact webmaster@writingforums.org but that address isn't found.
And on the faqs page for new members where it says: If, after having met all the requirements to post in the Writing Workshop, you still can't start a new thread in there, please PM a moderator (click here), it won't let me do it. It says: You do not have permission to view this page or perform this action. This is so frustrating!
