In the US of A, your MC would be legally required to own a handgun and carry it on his person. This is what the MC's person is for: a place for the MC to carry his handgun. The law stipulates that the MC must purchase his own person before obtaining a handgun...

Seriously, though, he's in Alabama which...yeah, one of the more gun-toting states around so the idea of him wearing a handgun on his hip wouldn't be that scandalous.
