Random Thought Thread

Anyone else ever find themselves imitating the way the person you're talking to speaks? Like their accent, lilt, even dialect? I try to stop myself 'cause it must be so weird for the other person, but sometimes I just can't help it.

No students. Seems everyone had to miss class for one reason or other, but no one got in touch with the others to see about rescheduling the class.

I still get paid, but my contract requires I wait in the classroom until the end of the lesson time.

40 minutes down, 80 more to go.

Bored.

 

How would it be abstruse?

Sign language is it's own unique language/form of communication.

It seems no different than any other languages that it can develop its own unique poetry forms. Now what signers would give focus or prize particularly is only speculation on my part, but it seems natural that as a visual performance it would not follow the constraints of the written language equivalent.

Like how Haiku's don't use rhyme, because of the sort of language Japanese is (with all proper sentences only ever ending in 5~ish sounds, and verb conjugation coming at the end of the sentence more or less forcing the point).

Edit: Found ASL poetry on YouTube. It's just as fascinating as I thought.

Did you post about this before? I seem to remember talking about it with you, because I do the same thing. It's not intentional and it's so embarrassing because it must seem like I'm trying to copy them.

I doubt they notice as much as us, though, because to them they don't have an accent IYSWIM?

 

It's possible I've mentioned it before... I was just reminded of it today cos I did it again.

And yeah, I hope they won't! I've even caught myself changing my tone to more nasal if I've been speaking to someone from a specific part of Helsinki, an accent I loathe.

I just rubbed it into my colleagues at work -- when they needed earplugs to protect their hearing from a loud noise -- that I have "natural earplugs". Dick move sure.

But considering what my boss did to me that time regarding my hearing impairment... making fun of me...

I took extreme pleasure out if it -- far more than I really should've.

 

Not the sign language itself, but the patterns it would have that would be considered poetry.

Do you find the concept of poetry from foreign languages abstruse?

Yes, but poetry as spoke language has characteristics that don't translate to foreign spoken languages too.

That's the nature of language & translation—the language of the communication helps form & inform upon the communication itself.

And so much more for artistic pursuits, there are inherent traits that can't follow into the other mediums or modes.

A Japanese waka doesn't operate the same in Swahili.

The Indian kural and the Russian chastushka might not translate or be accessible to non-native speakers.

Sign language is just another form of language, simply visual based, and so like all languages which have unique styles that may not translate to a nonspeaker it too might be difficult for an outsider—but I don't think inherently any more so.

I personally see it as equally accessible or else incomprehensible as all other types of foreign poetry would be to me. And I think I could learn to recognize & appreciate ASL poetry the same way I would Cambodian poems.

But you obviously don't have to agree with me, and I'll just have to accept our differences of opinion.

My pumpkin spice latte drinking wife (May or may not be saying she's "white." She actually part Pakistani but I mean in personality.) was singing it at work and surprising the hell out of her co-workers.

I think it's doggo speak for 'rough riders roll'. Or 'ruff ryders' as those lexical beasts DMX would say.

 

So one of the feral kittens is larger than the littermates and has distinct coat & pattern that makes me suspect his father might've been an actual wildcat and not just feralized domestic breed.

He's also the most cautious & the most clever & the least trusting.

I'm thinking of naming him Namir (male name meaning leopard) but had sudden second thoughts yesterday on whether I sexed him correctly—when he flicked his tail past me I thought he might've had the signs of a she. So now I'm confused.

If it is a she, I was thinking of changing the name to Namiri to make it feminine sounding.

I looked it up just to be safe, and apparently it means panther in Swahili.
