Hi I can't write listening to music with words so I listen to a lot of instrumental music. Do people have any suggestions? It can be anything from Post Rock to IDM and D&B. This is what I've been writing to:
Hi. I too listen to instrumental music when I write. The longer and more epic sounding the better. When I am writing something sad I purposely play the saddest songs I can find as well. It really helps get the juices flowing and quiets the things that threaten to derail my desired train of thought.
My favorites are early Michael Oldfield, before he turned to Euro-pop: Tubular Bells, Ommadawn, and Hergest Ridge. And Jean-Michel Jarre's Oxygène and Équinoxe, if you like electronic music.
I also can't write to music with lyrics. I listen to Danny Elfman (he did the Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack), Bruno Coulais' Coraline soundtrack, and Ludovico Einaudi. I also enjoy writing to Dario Marianelli, another great composer.
These threads are like daises... Lyrics, no lyrics, no problema. Since I have chosen a more aggressive theme for my duology, I have to suck it up for the sake of keeping mood and tone. That is not to say I don't find the lighter side enjoyable. Between two playlists I have a massive selection to choose from. But since lyrics are not your fortay, I would recommend Adrian von Ziegler's channel, the guy covers all genres. Though I will post a piece from someone else.
Me, too! (But usually when I'm on the road doing long-distance driving). Nightmare does have some lyricis, though ... and very good ones, I might add. You might get some insight into the people I hang with when I tell you about a young friend of mine. When she was in pre-school, she was asked what her favorite Christmas carol was. "Kidnap the Sandy Claws!" she replied.
Every type of music is too distracting for me while I am writing, but before to set the mood is fine.
