    Books with no direction

Discussion in 'Discussion of Published Works' started by Anonymouzz, Apr 26, 2017.

    1) What do you call a book that has no direction?
what i mean by this is, a novel that doesn't have a ending. The story isn't leading to nothing. Things happen but since the story has no direction, it becomes never ending. You don't know how the story ends.

We knew how Harry Potter would end. We knew how Lord of the rings would end.

I know there are plenty of TV shows like this but where are the books?

For Example: "This Is Us". The show IMO has no direction. It just endless drama that can span years and years with no clear end in sight. "Empire" is another show with endless drama that can last for years.

I love those shows because of the drama and the characters but where are some books like that?

I would love to read something in the vain of "This Is Us" or "Empire". Something different. But i don't know where to look to find those books that has that kind of storytelling.

"Empire" and "This Is Us" are classified as "Drama" but i can't find that genre in books.

lol anybody can help me out and find these books with no direction and just have endless drama

Perhaps the James Bond novels, started by Ian Fleming and carried on by many subsequent authors, would be the closest thing in the form of novels that I can think of to the kind of TV show format you speak of. They have tight story arcs within the bounds of any given novel, just as an episodic show would within a given episode, but they just go on and on and on. :)

Closest thing I even know of is Xanth novels, but each book still had it's own goal in mind at the end of them. They aren't entirely aimless, but there also wasn't a direction for the series itself, they were all just set in the same world with a lot of the same recurring characters, whose lives and mannerisms would grow on the reader with each passing book. It is heavily relying on the love of the characters themselves, so in this way it's along the same lines. Towards the 20th and the last few books I read of it sorta got a bit weird and you could kinda tell the author was grasping at straws, and there's only so many times you find certain puns to be funny, but overall it's a great, and pretty long, series. I read them to about book 22 I think because I loved the world and the characters and didn't care that they were getting silly, even for Xanth. The last few is when I started seeing the trend towards that, but there's 20 good ones there at least. It's still being written apparently, and perhaps it improved, but I haven't gone back to check. It might have introduced some new things that brought the series back as a whole.

lol I see James Bond more so action-adventure than Drama. I want the books with secret love affairs, family and friends scheming and plotting against each other, people wanting revenge lol just a bunch of drama like "Empire"

Seems there's now like 30 or more I think. The genre is fantasy, but it will occasionally take some twists on you. I don't want to give anything away, but there's some really wild concepts brought out in it. The main point of the book is puns, and lot of different kinds, and in most cases it has some interesting implications. The world itself created with lots of different puns, but the inhabitants don't really know that, it's only for the reader mostly. It's really hard to explain, you kinda have to read the first one to understand, but then if you sorta liked the first one, they get much better around book 5 or so. Everybody in the series has special abilities, but that becomes a whole thing itself, it's pretty funny. I read them as a kid, but they aren't necessarily just for YA or anything. There's a lot of masked adult humor, which is bizarre since the fans of the series range from kids to adults anyway. Kids find the adult humor funny because they can relate, adults find it funny because they know what it's about. Again, hard to explain...it really just takes some reading to figure it all out. Piers Anthony is the author.

Laurel K Hamilton's Anita Blake series is still on going, with no clear end.
It is about a Vampire Hunter who gets her power from sex, and there is
every werecreature known to man in it. Also a corny French Vampire
that has the hots for Anita.

@Dr.Meow what did you expect from a guy that calls 27 books a Trilogy?
There was bound to be a lack of story line beyond it all takes place in
a Fantasy universe and the MC's name is Bink.:p

Xanth hater! lol Technically, the "trilogy" remark was because 27 is divisible by 3. Just another of his jokes. Still love the universe, I'm tempted to see how the newer books are actually.

Well he is still alive, but pretty damn old. They might get a little wackier than normal.
Turns out there will be some coming out this year and beyond. Really seems to like
to never have a standard MC for any of them. That would drive me a bit nuts, not sure
if the cast is still the same though as he can be a bit long winded. So the Xanth series
is still around and kicking at 43 including the ones that have not come out yet.

I like his Bio Of a Space Tyrant Series. Which is odd considering I couldn't get
into the Xanth series. P Anthony is a big reason why I don't like Fantasy all that
    much.

Well, to each their own I suppose. If everyone was a fan of everything there'd be little reason for diversity. Still a fun series, I may not like the newer ones if they get too repetitive, so I'll have to see about that. Too bad he ruined fantasy for you though, it's a wonderful genre. Xanth is really more lighthearted fantasy though, certainly not something to take too seriously.

For what its worth my older sister made it through the original 27.
It is alright, I am working on an Urban Fantasy novel from another member
that is quite intriguing, so I might find Fantasy enjoyable again. :D

I can't believe no one has brought up Joyce's Ulysses.
