What are Your Two Magic: the Gathering Colors?

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by Simpson17866, Jul 20, 2017.

In Magic: The Gathering lore, the 5 philosophies of the Color Wheel are
    • White: order and conformity
    • Blue: progress and rationality
    • Black: selfishness and disregard for life
    • Red: passionate free-spiritedness
    • Green: simplicity, nature, and life

The generally accepted Allied pairs are
    • Blue/White: both care about restraint (opposite Red's reckless abandon)
    • Black/Blue: both care about advancing oneself (opposite Green's acceptable of the world as it is)
    • Red/Black: both care about individuality (opposite White's focus on everybody being the same as everybody else)
    • Green/Red: both care about following their natural instincts (opposite Blue's need to overthink everything)
    • White/Green: both care about the life of The Group as a whole (opposite Black's need to take what they can, when they can)
But even the Opposing pairs – or, as I just started calling them, the Axis pairs  (this may never catch on ) – are able to find common ground
    • White/Black: believe that the best world for exploiting others is the world where everybody is following the same rules and playing the same game (but not just any set of game rules: one that they are better at than anybody else)
    • Blue/Red: want to be free to explore the hidden rationality behind ideas that look crazy at first glance
    • Black/Green: recognition of life and death as two sides of the same coin and wanting to advance oneself by exploiting the cycle of both
    • Red/White: believes in choosing to join a regimented cause that the person is passionate about as being the right thing to do, resisting the sub-cultures that they would not be willing to conform to and fighting for the sub-cultures that they would be passionate about conforming to
    • Green/Blue: spreading the natural world by way of understanding and improvement, both of the natural world itself and of their own place in it
Everybody uses all 5 of these to some degree, but almost nobody is split evenly between all 5: I myself would be Blue first, then Red, Green, Black, and White last.

What would everybody else here be?

So, we're voting by what we identify with? I think that makes me blue/red.

ETA : but also maybe green and white. I think I may be fairly equal across the four.

I'd have to think about it. Dimir (b/u) is my favorite to play but I wouldn't describe my personality as such.

Allow me to sum up my position with my favorite flavor text.
The rules of logic and order have already made the choice for you.

I'd chose red as my tertiary color, though. A little bit of chaos is fun, especially in the face of a system that aims to quell it.

Yup! This is about the philosophies of the archetypes, not the card game mechanics that have been assigned to each :)

All right then, let's look at the most similar of each and see what differences we can come up with:
    • Blue versus White: When you think about "deliberation," do you imagine figuring out for yourself what the best thing to do would be, or do you imagine everybody being told what to do?
    • White versus Green: When you think about "peace," do you imagine everybody making everybody else do the same thing, or do you imagine everybody tolerating their differences?
    • Green versus Red: When you think about "instinct," do you imagine taking things as they come, or do you imagine rushing in at full speed?
Does this help? Or would looking at the 6 pairs be more helpful than looking at the 4 components?

B/W = figure out for self
    W/G = tolerance
    G/R = both

All right, then, so you ruled out White both times ;)

That leaves Blue, Red, and Green, so which one would you be most willing to live without?
    • Having the freedom to follow your intellectual passions, but with little connection to the natural world
    • Having the intellectual means to live in harmony with the natural world, but without the freedom to enjoy your strongest passions
    • Having the freedom to enjoy the simple life, but without intellectual stimulation
This is the hardest tri-color for me to narrow down too (I would rather have "Blue-Red-Green and no Black-White" in my life than have "Blue-Red and not Green-Black-White"), but if I absolutely have to narrow it down from 3 colors to 2, then I pick Blue and Red over Green.

I love the natural world, but I'm comfortable loving it from a distance.

EDIT: The Yellow Wallpaper hit me the hardest out of all of my college reading assignments because I need the freedom to follow my intellectual passions above all else.

I don't like any of those options lol. I want it all dammit!

This is an absurdly difficult decision for me.

Alright, @Simpson17866 - I guess I'd give up the natural world, but I'm not happy about it. :(

    Same here :(

Maybe I should make a second Tri-Color poll (that both of us would vote Blue/Red/Green for)?

If most people can narrow down main traits into two colors I guess I have to as well. I just can't imagine life without all three being much of a life at all, personally. I kind of need the natural world as part of my intellectual passion. And I have no idea how I would enjoy a simple life without intellectual stimulation. I mean, I'm all for the simple life, really I am, but to lose intellectual stimulation would, in fact, make it unbearable. I'm babbling. Sorry.

Like I said: everybody has some of everything ;)

    I'm Blue-Red-Green-Black-White, maybe you're either Blue-Red-Green-White-Black or Red-Blue-Green-White-Black?

I'd say by that my order is Red-Green-Blue-White-Black.

I play Naya, predominantly Gruul, but I'm not sure what that says about my personality ... I just really like zerg rushing, burn, and tanking damage with absurd life gain. And elf tribal. All of my friends hate elves now.

Yeah, Naya is classic, and Gruul will almost always flatten anything in a draft with limited creatures. I haven't passed with Elves on a tribal level recently... or really any of the tribes. Old elves or new elves? I'd like to see some of the dudes you're talking about.

One of my protagonists is Red/Black, but I imagine (from what little I know of the game mechanics) that if she ever played, then she would have more fun playing the big, stompy-monster Red/Green decks instead :)

    Interesting thread, Simpson.

I would be Green, blue, white, red, black

R/B will often savage R/G. Those stompy creatures need to come over early and often lest black remove them with kill spells. However, if R/G can sniff a little daylight the board can turn on you in a hurry. Really you can't go wrong, those these days I've found W/U struggling in drafts. Blue (U) especially... it's really the more of a complimentary color because it's creature poor and its tricksy mechanics won't do much without some beef to back them up.

Still thinking about my personality colors. Leaning Golgarri (G/B) at the moment if I had to pick from your character descriptions. The whole life/death interplay thing... though I find it hard to think about myself without using Red. So maybe I'm Boros (W/R)? Not sure.

    Hmm...

Well, if you like the intellectual interplay of life and death, but don't base your life on abusing it to take advantage of other people, then you'd probably be more Green than Black ;)

    Red/Green, maybe?

Little of both in my case - I don't play standard or anything. But there's a semi new edh precon (maybe 2015?) that was pretty heavy on the elves.

Joraga Warcaller and Ivy Lane Denizen are staples, Elvish Archdruid and Ezuri come to mind, Nissa Revane and Wellwisher are some favorites for that life gain.
