I'm not sure anyone was being literal in this line of conversation, my friend.

I think the hot vs creeper only applies to gray areas.

Like while there was a complete stranger watching me for an extended length of time who uninvitedly intruded into our group, without permission took my possession from my hands, then returned it to me without a word one way or another—he didn't actively do anything harmful. And he actually helped.

So there was leeway for interpretation: was that a gallant effort from some hero without a name, or a total creeper who had been spying on me & inserted himself where he was not wanted?

With the actions (or character) not shifting the scales one way or the other, the weight of sheer attraction towards the individual ultimately makes the final determination.

If its a person being aggressive or definitively harassing or assaulting your person, looks & attraction don't hold any weight at all.

If it's a person being compassionate, thoughtful, and downright kind, again looks & attraction don't hold any weight at all.

It's those pesky gray areas that we use a meaningless means of determining.

Yes. The content is certainly different and also the style of artwork. Yaoi is very lovey-dovey and often melodramatic. Emo-feels running off the page. Rarely is there any actual sex. No, no, no.

The style of drawing is either bishōnen or that unusual hold-over-from-the-80's look that always makes me think of a Nagel print (even though Nagel's work is always women).

Bara is defo made for gay dudes and nearly always by gay dudes. The lovey-dovey element is sometimes there, sometimes not. Heavy, heavy emphasis on the whole senpai-kohai dynamic. Almost to the point of fetish. There will be sex. Guaranteed. The style of drawing is much different. The feminized look is gone completely, sometimes moving up into a hyper-masculinized appearance.

So like otokoyaku of Takarazuka? (The actors of male roles from Japanese All Woman Theatre?)

Kindov'... but not. Hard for me to describe. It's a look that I associate with the mildly androgynous hipsterism of the 80's New Wave scene. The guys are usually tall, rail thin, elegant, effete. They're not drawn with the near-gender bending of bishōnen, but they aren't drawn in the guy's guy way either of bara. This is from Antique Bakery (the anime). This is pretty typical of yaoi drawing style.

    Ugh...

Manga/anime used to be interesting when it was rare and exotic, but now it's a constant howling outside the windows of my mind, and there's a draft on this thread.*

*not criticizing members or their enthusiasm, it's just a personal aversion to the art form due to overexposure.

    Hahaha :-D

    Real conversation I have had:

"I love reggaeton! It's fun and sexy!" said my friend.

"Yeah. Come live where I live for a month and deal with reggaetoneros blasting that garbage so hard you can hear the sheet metal of their cars vibrate at 3:00 am when you have to work the next day. Seriously. Try it," I replied.

"It can't be that bad." My friend is looking for an out because my tone is deadpan.

"Every god-damned-day." That last bit to be read in the voice of the eternally awesome S.L.J.

Anime and manga are, IMHO, related to the overall issue of Japan's being overrun with kawaii. Something like this:

Would barely register on my radar anymore. I live in heavily crosshatched area, with my sanity on one side and objective reality on the other.

There's nothing like the acoustics a $500 car can provide to a $2000 stereo, is there?

Honestly, I can't remember life before $100 bluetooth headphones... or bluetooth anything. My car just starts playing the same music that was playing in the house when I walked out the door. I don't even have to tell it to do anything. Fucking weird.

Unrelated note: when I first bought my car and wasn't familiar with all its features it told me one day that I was about to get a flat tire. I was like, "Get the fuck out of here, Mr. Car." Sure enough, a few minutes later I heard the whup-whup-whup of a flat. I pulled into my friendly neighborhood garage and said, "Hey, Dave, the car told me I was about to get a flat." He nodded, wiped his brow, and said, "Yeah, cars are smarter than they used to be, Homer."

I've a question about dogs. So I'm on the floor snuggling my dog while playing Fallout 4. I then realized that this is likely what he's seeing on the TV.
    IMG_0275.JPG
Do dogs notice/care about what's on TV? Does he, for instance, think that these are actual human beings looking at him? When the sound is on, he doesn't seem bothered by what's going on in the game (he ignores it entirely), but I'm just curious if dogs have some vague understanding that there are humans in the TV.

The intelligence of dogs tends to be on a case by case basis.

Certain breeds exhibit specialized intelligence more so than others, and even individual dogs of various breeds can show above or subpar intelligence for the breed standard.

Like English collies tends to be far more intelligent & aware than say the average American lab. But there are definitely individual labs that have the mental acuity that could blow you away.

Speaking now of cats & television (as our dogs are working breeds so they don't come in the living room mostly):

My current feral kitten Namir does not understand the concept of the mirror & is constantly thinking there is another cat in the room. He has tried to jump through the mirror several times, he has cried at his reflection to get it to play, he has gone in defensive aggressive mode when he hyperactive ran near the mirror & caught sight of a psychotic looking kitten running towards him, etc.

But you know what? He figured out how my phone & tablet works. He watched me and watched the screen. He took his paws and he clicked on things and pulled his paw down & scrolled. He watches the television & my tablet with me, and once when I had it paused on a comedy sketch on YouTube I came back to find him a minute later sitting quietly watching TEDtalks. I'm so amused by this I've taken countless photos & videos of him to post on my social media to show off my strange little kitten.

    IMG_0184.JPG IMG_2088.jpg IMG_2089.jpg

My last feral cat before him instantly understood the concept of his reflection and never was startled or tricked by the mirror. However, he never noticed the television or my phone or my computer, let alone knew how to operate any of the devices.

    So it varies wildly.

Does your dog watch the television? Can your dog see what the television displays/depicts? Does your dog show understanding that they are not flesh people or things?

I know some dogs where some answers are yes and some dogs where answers are no.

I don't know your dog, so I can't say for certain one way or another.

My dog is made out of love, strung together with cuddles, painted in games of playing hide and go seek with the bedsheets, but she's as sharp as a spoon. o_O

    • The game I call "fetch", she calls "this is mine and you can't have it back".
    • I call her Lee Lee, but the name she calls herself is pronounced like the sound of the plastic wrapper on a slice of cheese.
    • If I hide her ball under the very edge of the covers - while she watches me do it - I have committed witchcraft as far as she is concerned.
    • The list goes on. :-D

I went to my first live stand-up comedy show last night. It was pretty intense. All three of the performers were funny, but the headliner, Bobby Lee (Mad TV) is a fuckin' nut job. He pretty much got naked on stage, tricked an audience member into touching his wiener, etc. I was not expecting that.

    Aww. :3 Cute little kitty.

My lab mix seems to have some understanding of how doors work because when she finds that one of them is ajar, she nudges it open bit by bit so she can slip through. She also likes pawing and sniffing at random objects as if she's examining them.

My beagle mix, though, kind of couldn't care less. I don't think the pair has any concept of what a TV or a TV display is, so they wouldn't think those two people in my screenshot are actual people. They did hear a doorbell ring on a computer game once and went nuts, thinking it was the actual house doorbell.

My cat, before she died, did seem to recognize that things were moving on the TV and would track them with her head, bobbing up and down depending on what I was doing with the character. She also mistook a computerized cat meow for an actual cat meow and called back in an attempt to make contact.

My cat watched Milo and Otis very intently with me once, for about twenty minutes. I held my hand in front of his face and he pushed it down with his paw; he was definitely interested.

He was talking about his belly and how out of shape he was, walked to the edge of the stage, pulled his shirt up and said, "but it's soft, though, feel it." When the dude put his hand up, Bobby Lee grabbed it and put it on his dick....

    True story. Lol
